Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I believe that it is our responsibility, especially as community leaders, to be involved in the communities that we serve. I have been demonstrating this for many years now including things such as Rotary, WISD CTE program and CJ program, school safety and security, Smith County Peace Officer Association, Texas Police Chief’s Association, and East Texas Police Association. Locally we also have programs for the community such as National Night Out and Christmas on Main. I still have at least 12 more years in my career and will continue to serve our communities.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

Even though I have 24 years of public service and leadership, learning does not stop. I believe that good leaders continue to aspire to learn and improve every day. I am always looking for opportunities to improve and become a better leader. Policing is a unique career that faces many challenges both internally and externally. I have always strived to be a great example even before becoming a supervisor. With about 17 years of police supervision, including 6 ½ as a police chief, I bring experiences that many others have not faced. Working daily with the public, leading employees to help them become better, and facing huge challenges has taught me to understand that there are valuable opinions that may not always match mine. Service is always above self.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

I worked for Tyler PD for about 17 ½ years. I loved being part of that organization. Smith County is growing and facing new challenges. We are deep into a digital age, and this is probably not going to slow down. With the economic challenges this country is facing, we are in a good place to be the example. Searching for opportunities to tap into those financial resources is paramount to helping support the county needs and growth. Of course, my focus is on policing. There are some huge opportunities to improve all police departments. With the influx of new digital ideas, the future is exciting for policing. Just one example is the cutting-edge technology of DFR (drone first responders) that will help officers respond more quickly to calls and begin to assess the situation. This program has already proven in other cities to save time and money through better responses. I want to be part of finding ways to help the community grow and save money at the same time.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

This is probably one of my greatest strengths. I cannot be bought. Not too long after becoming chief, I had a local vendor donate about 50 cases of water to the police department. This is not something that happens often, but we do receive donations at times. About a week later, that person came to the department requesting that we use his company. Regardless of anything else, I quickly realized that he was trying to buy his way into making money from the city. This is not the ethical or right way to conduct business. I explained the first problem, that I could not use his company because he did not meet the minimum standards set to be a vendor. He was upset and began talking about all the things he could do for me and the department. The things he mentioned would have been helpful. However, I do not bend the rules even when I would personally benefit from it.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define civic/community involvement primarily as our responsibilities as residents to participate in the betterment of our community, whether through organized events, exercising our rights, or volunteering our time and efforts. Opportunities as basic as voting can be overlooked as a civic involvement but is imperative to creating a better community. Participating in organized efforts to improve our neighborhoods and the communities surrounding it, through volunteering and leading community service projects, allows for a more diverse and understanding city in which to grow. My volunteer experience closely ties into my reason for applying to Leadership Tyler. Currently, I primarily partner with East Texas Food Bank on a regular basis, volunteer with Brookshire’s for the Fresh 15, and have sought out local fundraising opportunities through iTry365. While I hope to continue my service with these organizations, I would like to learn more about local non-profit organizations and where the help is needed so that I can expand the number of places that I serve.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I hope to gain knowledge and insight about Tyler organizations, public policy and governance, and build relationships that allow me to better serve the Tyler community. I am the Chief Administration Officer at Family Circle of Care where we serve around 35,000 uninsured and underinsured patients each year, focusing on Pediatrics, OBGYN, Family Medicine, Dental, Behavioral Health, and Optometry. While community needs assessments are a great tool, I hope to engage with leaders that I might not have worked with in the past, as well as those I am unaware of, to identify where we can be most impactful to the area. Accessible healthcare is a fundamental cornerstone to a thriving community, and I feel a responsibility to supplement Tyler as best as I can. The unique quality that I feel I bring is a different perspective. In looking through the alumni of Leadership Tyler, there are plenty of amazing healthcare leaders, but none from a Federally Qualified Health Center. Part of our mission is to provide assistance to those that need it, and part of that responsibility is taking every opportunity to connect them to other nonprofits in the area. If selected for Leadership Tyler, I would be able to learn from other leaders but also bring insight into resources they may not be familiar with.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

This question is a question that is close to my heart. The residents in the Tyler/Smith County area would benefit from local organizations/partnering businesses providing opportunities for young adults to receive training and education on entering the workforce. We partner with Workforce Solutions East Texas, and they do a great job assisting residents that have been out of work for some time, but there are not many programs for those that are entering employment as a young adult, outside of school counselor responsibilities – and even those can be limited by other educational responsibilities. I often see new hires that come prepared with significant skills and knowledge, but they are new to expectations and accountability, especially those of healthcare. Some are able to succeed and learn quickly, some have a longer training time, and unfortunately, some cannot meet the needs of the position and move on to the next business. I believe that a committee that is made up of local business owners and leaders could produce impactful curriculum that is relevant specifically to our area. This curriculum could be used in schools, presented in a free workshop format for the community at large. I would be pleased to be personally engaged by being on the curriculum planning committee.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

Years ago, when I was in an analyst role, my supervisor encouraged me to slightly adjust the data reported in an analysis I was working on. This report was intended to be presented to leadership. The changes they asked for weren’t direct falsifications, but changing the data would have excluded some key information. Personal and professional integrity very important to me, and I weighed the next steps carefully in order to retain my integrity as well as the relationship I had built. I scheduled some time with my supervisor to talk through their request by asking clarifying questions. I understood their desire to show the positive metrics so that we were regarded as making positive changes, but I explained my stance on the need to remain impartial, continue being honest, and reporting all the data accurately. I spent time expanding on the fact that perfection was unlikely and that the data we would be excluding would be identified in other departments’ reports. We were able to truly understand each other better, as well as bring the discussion back to our values, and they eventually agreed that the right thing to do for the organization was to report accurate data. The data and analysis remained intact, and the situation was resolved without major conflict.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Civic and community involvement refers to the active participation of individuals or organizations in activities that improve the quality of life within a community. It is grounded in a sense of responsibility, service, and connection to others.
Over the next five years, my plan for civic and community involvement is deeply aligned with the mission of Family First Connection and the needs of families in the Tyler, Texas area. I also plan to expand involvement in local boards, coalitions, and advisory committees that align with child welfare, family services, and nonprofit development. Serving in these roles allows me to contribute to broader community decision-making and advocate for policies and practices that support families. It also provides an opportunity to learn from other leaders, share insights, and bring innovative ideas back to Family First Connection.
One of my primary goals is to strengthen partnerships within the local community. This includes working more closely with family courts, attorneys, law enforcement, social workers, and mental health professionals to ensure that families experiencing conflict have access to safe, supportive services. I aim to create a more coordinated system of care that prioritizes the safety and well-being of children.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect to utilize this experience as both a learning opportunity and a platform for meaningful impact. Through exposure to key sectors such as education, healthcare, government, nonprofit services, and economic development, I will gain a deeper understanding of how systems in Tyler intersect and influence one another. I plan to utilize my experiences by building strong, lasting relationships with other leaders across diverse industries. Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

The most meaningful opportunity would be strengthening coordinated support systems for families experiencing conflict, separation, and instability, particularly those navigating the court system. Services are often fragmented, reactive, or difficult for families to access and understand. This creates a gap that can unintentionally place children at greater emotional and physical risk. The opportunity lies in creating a more integrated, proactive, and family-centered approach to care. By improving coordination between family courts, legal professionals, social services, schools, and nonprofits, the community can move from a crisis-response model to a prevention and support model.

Children are at the center of this issue. When families are in conflict, children often experience stress, instability, and emotional trauma. Investing in family stability is essential to building a healthier, safer future.

Through Family First Connection, I am already working directly with families navigating high-conflict situations. I would expand this impact in the following ways: build stronger community partnerships, a network of services, education, awareness, advocacy, and leading by example through organizational growth. We can create a more supportive environment for families.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

As a leader of Family First Connection, I have faced situations where maintaining personal and professional integrity requires difficult decisions. One moment stands out to me in which there was subtle but real pressure to bend the established policies to accommodate a parent's request. I deeply understood the emotional weight of the situation. As someone committed to strengthening families, I wanted to support reunification and reduce barriers where possible, but the policies are in place and exist for a reason: to ensure the safety, neutrality, and emotional well-being of the child. Compromising those standards, even slightly, could set a precedent and potentially put the child-and the integrity of the organization at risk. I approached the situation by responding with empathy but firmness. In addition, I worked to offer alternative solutions that stayed within our policies. There was some initial frustration and disappointment; however, by maintaining a calm, respectful, and transparent approach, I was able to preserve the relationship while upholding the organization's policies. By choosing to stand firm in my values, leading with empathy, I was able to navigate the situation in a way that protected the child, respected the parent, and upheld the mission of the organization

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

I see a significant opportunity for aging adults in the Tyler/Smith County area. I am so passionate about this need that I have decided to start my own business to address it. Changes in rehab access, reimbursement and affordability have created a gap for older adults who have completed acute care, been discharged from home health or are experiencing declines in strength, mobility or independence. This gap adds pressure to physicians, hospitals, nursing facilities and our community as a whole. My goal is to build a company that provides individualized fitness, wellness, fall prevention and education in the comfort of older adults' homes.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

Personal integrity can be challenged by well-intentioned factors such as team cohesion, career success, or the need to provide for family. I experienced this firsthand years ago while working for another therapy company in another city. The team I had joined was engaged in fraudulent Medicare billing, achieving large profits and relaxed workdays. In order to avoid committing fraud myself I had to work twice as hard to deliver quality care to the patients God placed in front of me while trying to keep up with my peers. When my manager wrote me up and told me I needed to match the productivity numbers of my team, I faced a difficult decision. I remembered a poster my mother had given me long ago: "Stand up for what's right, even if you are standing alone." I chose to continue doing the right thing even though it cost me my job. Looking back, I do not regret that decision and am proud of the personal integrity the Lord has developed in me.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Civic/Community involvement means actively investing in the well-being and growth of the place you call home. This can look like major acts, such as voting, or smaller acts, like participating in a park cleanup day. Both are essential to building a stronger, more connected community. True involvement is not about the size of the action, but the dedication and heart behind it.

I have always had a desire to serve, but since beginning my career in the nonprofit field, that passion has grown even stronger. I’ve been blessed to see firsthand the impact of volunteerism. Over the next five years and more, I plan to intentionally set aside time each month to serve the community that has invested so much in me. I am especially passionate about advocating for individuals with special needs and plan to volunteer more with programs such as day camps, Night to Shine, and overnight summer camps. Also, I currently serve as the Philanthropy Advisor for my sorority at UT Tyler and am working my way up to become the Chapter Advisor so I can continue empowering and mentoring future female leaders. I plan to give more because Tyler has given so much to me!

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I plan to use my Leadership Tyler experience to build meaningful connections and, truthfully, develop real friendships. I’m at a point in my life where I’m confident in who I am and clear on the goals I have for my future. As I’ve grown, I’ve realized that some of my long-term friendships no longer align with who I’m becoming. I’ve stepped into a season where I’m more focused on my career, my community, and becoming the best version of myself. I’m ready to let go of what’s behind me and fully step into what’s ahead. I’m all in. I want to meet people, shake hands, and build roots in Tyler that last a lifetime!

I bring enthusiasm, authenticity, and my whole heart. I’m an empath at my core and naturally see the best in people. While that doesn’t always work in my favor, I choose to stay optimistic and lead with trust until proven otherwise. I show up fully, I care deeply, and I want to build relationships that create a lasting impact.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

Attending a private school from K4 through 12th grade, we were encouraged (and at times pressured) to apply to and attend high-end colleges. Colleges such as Tyler Junior College and The University of Texas at Tyler were often looked down upon, seen as lacking the “college experience” or only as options if you wanted to stay close to home. Unlike them, I take pride in having attended both institutions and am now a strong advocate for each.

I believe our community has an opportunity to continue investing in TJC and UT Tyler, as they are developing the next generation of our local workforce. During my time at both schools, I met numerous students who moved to the area for their education but had not truly experienced Tyler. Many had never been to the Rose Garden, downtown, or visited local staples like Don Juan’s!

Rather than waiting for students to seek out internships or volunteer opportunities, I believe we should be more proactive and reach out to them through mentorship programs or by serving as a “tour guide” of Tyler. By intentionally connecting students to the community, we can highlight the benefits of living in Tyler and encourage them to stay, work, and invest here long-term.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

During my first semester in a sorority, I was encouraged to run for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Vice President position, and I was honored to be elected. A few months into my role, I found myself in a situation where a group, including our President, was speaking disrespectfully about Christian conservatives. As someone who identifies as both, I had to decide whether to stay quiet to avoid conflict or stand up for what I believe.

Although it was uncomfortable (I usually avoid confrontation), I chose to be honest. That moment shifted how some people saw me, and I realized I had actually been encouraged to pursue the position based on assumptions about who I was and what I believed. While I was initially hurt by that realization, I also realized it strengthened me and deepened my commitment to lead with integrity instead of seeking approval.

I continued to serve as the Vice President of DEI with intention and created an environment where people felt seen and respected regardless of their beliefs. That experience taught me that integrity isn’t just about standing firm in your beliefs, it’s about how you show up for others. I believe that being surrounded by people who think differently from you is where real growth and learning happens!

I personally do not live in Tyler. I work in Winnsboro, which is a smaller community and some change. I like to see there is more access to healthcare, are a retirement to lower income families as we are a retirement community. I’d like to see more. More services provided for the community.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

Change is not difficult for me as I am flexible and adaptable. Although at times I tend to be very type a personality. I’m very open to listening to the other side and taking suggestions. I do not compromise my integrity or the integrity of my employer or my employees. If there is an integrity issue I will involve my HR partner. I do recognize that change is different for everyone and so is the pressure that is felt and not everyone handles it the same way, but I’m always willing to sit down, face-to-face and listen to the person and the suggestions that are made.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Civic and community involvement, to me, means intentionally investing time, skills, and effort into the well-being and growth of the community I serve. It goes beyond volunteering; it requires being informed, engaged, and committed to creating meaningful and lasting change, especially for underserved populations.

As a healthcare professional, my approach to community involvement focuses on improving access, education, and health outcomes. I believe in supporting preventative care efforts and helping bridge the gap between healthcare systems and the communities that need them most.

Within the next five years, I plan to expand my involvement in initiatives centered on health equity and community wellness. I am particularly interested in participating in outreach programs that promote early detection, prevention, and health education for populations that are often overlooked.

I also plan to mentor students and young professionals interested in healthcare, helping to develop a stronger and more diverse future workforce. Through these efforts, I aim to contribute to a healthier, more informed, and empowered community.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect to utilize my Leadership Tyler experience as a catalyst for personal growth and greater community impact. Through this program, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the needs and opportunities within Tyler while building meaningful relationships with other community leaders. I plan to apply what I learn by strengthening my leadership approach and expanding collaborative efforts, particularly in addressing healthcare disparities and serving underserved populations.

This experience will equip me to be more strategic, informed, and effective in bridging gaps between organizations and the communities they serve.

I will bring compassion, professionalism, and hands-on healthcare experience to the class. Working with diverse populations has strengthened my empathy, cultural awareness, and ability to connect with others. I am also collaborative, solutions-oriented, and value open dialogue and shared learning.

I am committed to both contributing and growing all while bringing my perspective while learning from others to help create meaningful, lasting impact within the Tyler community.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One significant opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area is improving health equity and access to preventative care. Many individuals, particularly in underserved communities, face barriers such as limited access to resources, lack of health education, and delayed screenings. These gaps often lead to preventable conditions being diagnosed at later stages, resulting in poorer outcomes and increased strain on the healthcare system.

This is important because healthier communities lead to stronger, more sustainable growth overall. When individuals have access to education, early detection, and consistent care, they are better equipped to live productive and fulfilling lives.

I could be personally engaged in this effort by supporting and participating in community outreach initiatives focused on health education, screenings, and preventative care. Through my background in healthcare, I can help bridge the gap between providers and the community by advocating for accessible services and culturally competent care.

Additionally, I would collaborate with local organizations to expand awareness and connect individuals to available resources. By combining education, outreach, and advocacy, I aim to contribute to a more informed, healthier community in Tyler and Smith County.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

In my professional experience, I once felt pressure to overlook a concern that impacted the quality of care being provided. The easier option was to move forward without addressing it, but it did not align with my values or professional standards.

Despite the unspoken expectation to stay quiet, I chose to speak up. I took time to assess the situation and then communicated my concerns clearly and respectfully, emphasizing the importance of accountability, safety, and trust.

Although it was uncomfortable, I remained firm and offered alternative solutions that aligned with both ethical standards and the needs of the situation. The concern was ultimately acknowledged, and adjustments were made to better support quality outcomes.

This experience reinforced that integrity requires consistency, even when it is difficult. It also showed me that addressing challenges with professionalism and respect can lead to positive and meaningful change.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define civic and community involvement as actively contributing time, expertise, and resources to initiatives that strengthen the local community, support economic growth, and improve quality of life. It is a duty and a privilege to use my strengths to contribute to this wonderful community that I call home.

Over the next five years, I plan to deepen my involvement in initiatives related to housing, community development, and economic growth in East Texas. This includes supporting local housing organizations, mentoring individuals interested in property management and real estate careers, and partnering with community groups to promote responsible housing practices.

Given my role in multifamily operations, I also expect to be involved in conversations and committees related to housing policy, affordability, and compliance, ensuring that both residents and property owners are fairly represented. Additionally, I am interested in participating in local chambers, nonprofit boards, or advisory groups where I can contribute operational insight and help drive meaningful, community-focused solutions.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect to utilize the Leadership Tyler experience as an opportunity to expand my perspective beyond my day-to-day role and gain a deeper understanding of the people, challenges, and opportunities that shape our community. While my professional focus is in multifamily operations, I recognize that sustainable growth in Tyler requires collaboration across industries, and I am eager to learn from leaders in other sectors. Through this program, I hope to strengthen my ability to lead with a broader community mindset, bringing back insights that not only benefit our company and clients, but also contribute to responsible growth and long-term stability within the region. I am particularly interested in how housing intersects with economic development, workforce stability, and quality of life. I believe I bring a unique perspective rooted in both operations and real-world application. My role requires balancing the needs of property owners, residents, and regulatory requirements, which has shaped my ability to problem-solve, communicate effectively, and make decisions that consider multiple stakeholders. I am also highly engaged, solutions-oriented, and not afraid to ask thoughtful questions or challenge ideas in a productive way. Above all, I bring a genuine desire to grow!

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One of the greatest opportunities for change in the Tyler Smith County area is creating a more balanced and sustainable housing market that works for both residents and property owners. In today’s climate rising rents are often a symptom not the root issue. Increasing property taxes insurance and operating costs have placed significant pressure on housing providers many of whom are struggling to remain viable even at higher rent levels. At the same time these rising costs impact residents making it more difficult to qualify for housing and maintain stability. This creates a cycle where both owners and renters are strained by factors largely outside of their control. From my experience in multifamily operations I see an opportunity for more informed collaboration between local leadership housing providers and community stakeholders. Addressing underlying cost drivers while promoting responsible growth will be key to maintaining a healthy housing market. I am uniquely positioned to contribute by bridging the gap between property owners and residents and bringing real world insight into both perspectives. A strong community depends on a housing market where both providers and residents can succeed.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

In my role, I regularly operate between property owners and residents, where competing priorities can create pressure to compromise fairness or consistency. There have been times when I’ve been pushed to make exceptions that would benefit one party but conflict with established policies, Fair Housing standards, or the responsibility to treat all residents equally. In those moments, I rely on the structure our industry provides. I am genuinely grateful for the laws, regulations, and professional standards that govern property management, because they create a clear framework that supports integrity, even when conversations become tense. Rather than viewing these guidelines as limitations, I see them as a foundation that allows me to make decisions confidently and consistently.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define civic and community involvement as showing up, speaking up, and working together to make things better for everyone. To me, it’s not just about being present, but actually creating spaces where people feel comfortable connecting, sharing ideas, and being heard.
Over the next five years, I see myself continuing to uplift young adults and those who are still figuring things out, helping them feel like they have a place and a voice in Tyler. A lot of times people just need the right environment and opportunity to engage, and I want to be a part of creating that.
Whether that’s through hosting events, building connections, or simply encouraging people to get involved, I want to help bridge the gap between the community and the people who may feel disconnected from it. My goal is to continue creating opportunities for meaningful conversations, collaboration, and growth that ultimately lead to a stronger, more inclusive Tyler.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I plan to use my Leadership Tyler experience to break down barriers and help people, especially those early in their careers, see that there are real opportunities out here. Sometimes it can feel like our voices aren’t being heard or we just don’t know where to start, and I want to help shift that. I want to connect people to resources, share what I’ve learned, and show them we can grow and thrive right here in Tyler.
What I bring to the class is a real passion for community and the ability to connect with all kinds of people. I naturally create spaces where folks feel comfortable being themselves and speaking up. I’m big on uplifting others and making sure people know their voice matters. I’m coming in ready to learn, grow, and pour back into others along the way.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

I think one opportunity for change in Tyler and Smith County is around inclusivity. I do feel like there are efforts being made to listen to people and keep young adults here so our community can stay thriving and innovative, but I also feel like there’s more we could be doing. There’s still room to be more intentional about making sure people feel heard, included, and actually part of what’s going on.
For me, that looks like continuing to show up in spaces where hearing different voices are welcomed and needed. I also want to encourage others who feel the same way to speak up and get involved. I would continue doing that while also being a consistent voice in rooms where decisions are being made.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

I had an opportunity to collaborate on an event that was literally the same concept as something someone I had just worked with had already created. It wasn’t just similar, it was pretty much verbatim, and at the time no one else in Tyler was doing anything like it, so it felt like a direct copy. While it probably would’ve benefited me to move forward, it didn’t sit right with me. I try to move with respect, especially in business and within my community, and I wanted to be mindful of that.
There was definitely some pressure to say yes because it could’ve opened doors and brought more visibility, but I decided to pass on it. I wanted to make sure I was making a decision that actually aligned with my values, not just what looked good in the moment.
At the end of the day, I’d rather move with integrity and maintain strong relationships than take an opportunity that doesn’t fully align with how I like to operate.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

There are a lot of non-profit organizations serving the Tyler/Smith county area. I would like to see them working together in a healthy way to decrease the overlap not only in service but in seeking funding. I believe it could decrease donor fatigue and serve the community more efficiently. I'm not sure yet how I could be engaged but I look for opportunity in the future.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

Working for a non-profit, I live in the tension between honoring donors as people and the pressure to focus on the finances of the organization. This has led to difficult conversations, practicing boundaries and personal growth. Standing up for donors over procedure is important to me as is being kind and assertive. I handle this situations the best I can using listening skills, understanding and patience.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

To whom much is given, much is expected. Tyler is home and has provided many of us with the opportunity for growth in every area of our lives. We would not be good civil servants without paying it forward to others by investing back into the community that has given us so much.

There are many ways in which to “give back”. To some, it’s a monetary contribution. To others, it’s the gift of time or service. From my perspective, it’s all encompassing. If a cause is near and dear to you, pour yourself into it. Whether through board service, volunteerism, or in gifting to the cause, everyone has the ability to make a difference.

I am fortunate in my career that I’m able to contribute both time and monetarily to the causes I care about. Board service is especially important to me as these community members provide guidance to these organizations, utilizing their unique sets of skills for the betterment of the organization. I have served on the boards of several non-profits over the years, and while it can be difficult at times, it can also be incredibly rewarding.

I rolled off of three boards last year, and I’m looking forward to my next opportunity to serve. Leadership Tyler may be a springboard into the next chapter.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

Nothing spurs personal growth like gaining life experience. To that end, I see using my time with LT to grow as a community leader, and in turn, fostering the growth of my fellow classmates. It’s easy to get stuck in the flow of everyday life, both at work and in our personal lives. I feel that this program provides a unique opportunity to step out of the repetitive routine and see things through the eyes of not only the course curriculum, but from the perspective of others in the class. I’m excited to learn more about not only the community we live in and new ways to serve, but also the industries that the class represents. I’m hopeful that there are some synergies that will benefit the city we call home.

As for my unique qualities, we all have strengths (and weaknesses) that have prepared us for this life. Learning to appreciate those, and discovering those of others, should be something we all take away from this experience. My personal strengths are a combination of strategic planning, building close relationships, and maintaining a strong moral compass. I rely on these every single day, and I feel that they will serve me well throughout the course of the program.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

I believe that, in so many ways, modern society has built systems that reward individual accomplishment and in turn, we've created a structure that allows so many of us to hide away in our own personal bubbles. Through social media (a potential cancer to us all) we have, in many ways, destroyed the fabric of community. The Covid era exacerbated this even more so, and while huge technological advancements were made, coming together to celebrate, problem solve, and govern has taken a backseat in our competitive online culture.

So where do I see the opportunity? In reaching our young people. Teaching and showing them the ripple effects of the decisions they make, both during their school years as well as their early careers. Show them what it means to be a community. The give and take of commerce, the structure of our government, and the skills needed to build strong communities moving forward.

Leadership Tyler has had a great impact on professionals in our city, but could this be multiplied even further by reaching high-performing students in our area? Preparing these future leaders through such a curriculum could have a lasting impact on our city. I would be honored to assist in the design and implementation of such a program.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

I pride myself on following my long-held set of personal beliefs. The straight and narrow has been a way of life for me, even as a small child. Never a troublemaker, never a partier. While others were learning life lessons of another sort, there I was deep in the tradition of what was Boy Scouts. I use the word was, because things have since changed.

Not one to stand in the way of progress, I do feel that long-standing values and traditions deserve a certain level of respect and appreciation before tearing them down. Although Boy Scouts of America had it's own issues, many in the community felt like what ended up transpiring was a bridge too far.

The Boy Scouts officially changed their name to Scouting, and began allowing females to participate, even up to earning the hallowed Eagle rank. What did this mean? Was it a personal attack on Girl Scouts? Yes. Was it a personal attack on the boys that had already achieved Eagle? Many thought so. While some Eagle Scouts sent in their medals, returning the award that they fought so hard for, I sat silent. I swallowed my pride and accepted that the world had changed.

It's something I think about often. This wasn't a time when I felt pressure to compromise. I did.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One key opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area is increasing civic engagement, particularly among younger residents and those who may feel disconnected from local decision-making. Many people are unaware of how local government works, what resources are available, or how their voice can influence community outcomes. This can lead to lower participation in elections, public meetings, and community initiatives.
I would actively work to promote awareness and participation in local civic processes. This could include volunteering with organizations that focus on voter education, helping register voters, or encouraging participation in local elections and forums.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

In a previous work setting, I worked alongside an individual whose behavior and comments at times reflected views that I felt were inappropriate and inconsistent with my personal values. There were moments where I felt pressure to stay silent in order to avoid conflict or maintain a smooth working environment.
However, I believe integrity means upholding respect and professionalism, even when it’s uncomfortable. I handled the situation by maintaining clear boundaries. I did not engage with or support inappropriate comments, and when necessary, I redirected conversations back to work-related topics to keep interactions professional and focused.
At the same time, I made a conscious effort to treat the individual with respect,

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

To me, civic involvement means using my professional skills and personal connection to Tyler to help strengthen our community. This is a place I care deeply about, and having moved back with plans to stay for the rest of my life, I want to give back to the community that raised me.

While I haven't been formally involved in organizations to date, I'm genuinely committed to changing that. As someone dedicated to financial planning, I see clear opportunities to contribute in ways such as hosting financial literacy workshops, serving on boards or nonprofit committees, or mentoring young adults on finance and business matters. These areas align with both my expertise and my desire to create meaningful impacts in Tyler, but I'm also open to other opportunities that emerge and am very willing to give my time. I also love sports, and am a former athlete, so very willing to get involved with youth sports programs, etc.

This leadership program feels like the right catalyst to formalize my commitment to giving back to Tyler, and to connect with others who share a passion for our community's future.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect to utilize my Leadership Tyler experience in a couple ways. First, I hope to utilize the leadership skills learned through the program to help strengthen my firm's culture and community involvement. Second, I see this as an opportunity to build relationships with other committed leaders and like-minded people in Tyler and contribute to the Tyler community's long-term success through collaboration with them.

What I will bring to a Leadership Tyler class is a blend of professional expertise in areas around financial planning and high-level strategic thinking, combined with a genuine desire and commitment to strengthen Tyler's future. Having returned to Tyler after spending time elsewhere, I will bring a fresh perspective on how Tyler can improve while also recognizing and understanding its history.

Additionally, I bring a willingness to listen and be an active participant in group discussions. My experience in working with a diverse range of clients on complex financial matters has taught me the importance of understanding different perspectives. I believe these qualities, combined with my professional expertise and genuine commitment to Tyler, would make me a valuable member of a Leadership Tyler class.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

This is a tough question for me, as I don't know if I have been back in Tyler long enough to really have an opinion on potential areas for change. I think the city has done a great job with improving the public school system, driving economic growth, as evidenced by the development along South Broadway, and undertaking projects such as the Square renovation.

If anything, I believe there is always a need for financial literacy improvement, especially amongst the youth, as there are things that are not being taught in school that kids and young adults should know about. As mentioned previously, I could personally be involved in leading workshops, etc., to help change this.

In addition, I firmly believe in the power of youth sports. Speaking from experience, playing sports has taught me very valuable life lessons and instilled qualities in me that have shaped me into the person I am today. Qualities such as discipline, work ethic, perseverance, teamwork, communication, integrity, and many others can be learned through playing sports. I would love to get involved with existing youth sports programs or help implement additional ones, if necessary.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

About five years ago, I was working as a financial advisor in Dallas when our practice was bought out. The new owners required non-compete agreements, and shortly after, the workplace became hostile. I left to start my own practice as a result.

After leaving, clients I had built genuine relationships with reached out, wanting to move their accounts to me. I felt immense pressure, financially and relationally, to accept them as clients. They were people that I cared about, they wanted to work with me, and I honestly needed the business. Since they technically approached me first, I wasn't violating the terms of my non-compete.

I also had serious doubts about the new owner's ability to take care of them and serve them as well as I could. These doubts, combined with how they had treated me, caused me to seriously wrestle with this dilemma. Accepting these clients would give me some much-needed revenue, and I would stick it to the new owners.

Ultimately, I refused to onboard these clients, deciding that acting in good faith, regardless of legal technicality, and maintaining my integrity and honor was more important than the potential revenue I would earn from these clients. At the end of the day, accepting these clients just didn't feel right.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Civic and community involvement means actively investing time, resources, and leadership to improve the well-being of the community where you live and work. To me, it goes beyond occasional volunteering and reflects a long-term commitment to strengthening local organizations, supporting people in need, and helping create opportunities for others. Strong communities are built when individuals and businesses take responsibility for giving back to the places that support them.

Over the next five years I'll become an empty nester and I plan to continue expanding my involvement through both service and organizational support. Through my business, I intend to remain active in community partnerships, including our philanthropic endeavors in local event and non-profit sponsorships and volunteerism. I also expect to deepen relationships with churches and civic groups where we can provide practical assistance such as volunteer labor, facility repairs, or financial support when needed. I am exceptionally interested in devoting mentorship and time to the ETX Launchpad as I feel I have a special set of skills that I can offer to help upcoming generations.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect the Leadership Tyler experience to deepen my understanding of the organizations, leaders, and challenges that shape the Tyler community. Understanding how the different sectors work together to build our community will help me see where I am able to best contribute to its growth and wellbeing. I especially look forward to building relationships and learning from individuals who are committed to investing in the future of our community.

I bring an entrepreneurial mindset and a practical, systems-driven approach to solving problems. Building and scaling a multi-million-dollar company and franchise system has required me to focus on strategy, financial management, team development, and creating systems that help organizations operate more effectively. I also believe strongly in stewardship and that successful businesses should invest back into the communities that support them. I tend to look at challenges through the lens of “how do we actually solve this,” and I value collaboration that leads to real outcomes.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One opportunity for change in Tyler and Smith County is strengthening the connection between our local workforce and the real needs of businesses in the area. East Texas continues to grow, yet many companies struggle to find skilled workers while many young people aren’t sure what opportunities exist for them locally. There is a gap between education, training, and the careers that are actually available here. As a mother of two young adults, I have been spending time in these conversations at home quite a bit lately as they consider their own futures.

I believe we can do a better job exposing students and young adults to practical career paths, including skilled trades, entrepreneurship, and other professions that don’t always require a traditional four-year degree. Many of these paths provide strong, stable careers, but they often aren’t visible to students early enough.

As a business owner, I can contribute by sharing real-world experience, supporting mentorship opportunities, and helping connect young people with practical pathways into the workforce. I’m also interested in learning how local schools, nonprofits, and businesses can work together more effectively so that more people see a future for themselves here in East Texas.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

The most recent time I felt pressure to compromise my integrity was during a business dispute where it would have been easier to stay quiet about practices I believed were wrong. Addressing the issue meant risking financial and professional consequences, and it would have been far simpler to look the other way. Instead, I chose to confront the situation directly. That decision ultimately led to legal proceedings and a lengthy dispute that was both stressful, expensive and time-consuming. Even so, I believed it was important to stand by my principles of honesty, transparency, and fair business practices rather than remain silent. Because I stood up, it empowered others to do the same. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

That experience reinforced for me that integrity is most meaningful when it's tested. It's easy to claim strong values when there's no cost attached, but real integrity requires holding to those values when doing so is difficult and you have a lot to lose. While the process was hard, I don't regret choosing the path that aligned with my principles. It strengthened my commitment to lead my business in a way that reflects fairness and accountability.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define civic and community involvement as actively engaging in efforts that strengthen and improve the well-being of the community. It is about being engaged, building relationships, and taking responsibility for helping address local needs. Over the next five years, I hope to expand my involvement in organizations that support children and families, as this is an area I am especially passionate about. I am currently involved with Champions for Children, and I would like to build on that experience by becoming more engaged with additional organizations that focus on youth development, education, and family support. Through Leadership Tyler, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the community’s needs and connect with organizations where I can make a meaningful impact. I am particularly interested in opportunities that allow me to support young people, advocate for resources, and contribute to programs that help children succeed both academically and personally.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I hope to utilize my Leadership Tyler experience as an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally by stepping outside of my comfort zone. As someone who is naturally introverted, I see this program as a chance to strengthen my confidence, build meaningful relationships, and become more actively engaged in my community. The Tyler area is not only where I grew up, but where my daughter will grow up, which gives me a deep, personal investment in its future. I want to be more intentional about contributing to the community in a positive and lasting way, and I believe Leadership Tyler will help me better understand the needs, challenges, and opportunities within our city. While I may not yet know all that the program entails, I will bring a genuine passion for the community, a willingness to listen and learn, and a thoughtful, collaborative perspective. I value building connections and approaching situations with empathy, and I’m eager to contribute in a way that supports both my peers and the broader Tyler community.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One significant opportunity for change in the Smith County area is strengthening efforts to retain our younger generation within the local workforce. As our community faces an aging workforce, it is increasingly important to create intentional pathways that connect students to educational and career opportunities available right here at home. This effort can begin as early as high school by increasing awareness of the diverse options available, whether through higher education institutions like TJC and UT Tyler, or through local trade and vocational programs. Many students may not fully realize the range of meaningful, sustainable careers that exist within our own community. I am already engaged in this work through my involvement with the Tyler Area Business Education Council, which focuses on bridging the gap between education and industry. However, I see an opportunity to expand my impact. In my role in HR with a major local employer, I can help foster stronger partnerships with area schools, support outreach initiatives, and participate in conversations with students about both degree and non-degree career paths. By helping students better understand their options, I hope to contribute to building a stronger, more sustainable workforce for the future of our community.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

Early in my career, I faced a situation that tested my commitment to integrity when I discovered that an employee, who was also a distant relative, was using the company UPS account for personal shipments. When I addressed the issue, the employee asked me to overlook it because of our family connection and assured me it would not happen again. As a new employee, I felt the pressure to avoid conflict and not “rock the boat,” especially given the family dynamic. However, I recognized that allowing the behavior to continue would compromise both company policy and my own professional integrity. I made the decision to address the situation objectively, requiring repayment for the unauthorized charges and placing the employee on a Last Chance Agreement in accordance with company policy. Unfortunately, the behavior occurred again several months later. At that point, I followed through with the appropriate course of action, which resulted in termination. While it was not an easy situation, I remained consistent and fair in applying policy, regardless of personal relationships. This experience reinforced the importance of maintaining integrity, even when it is uncomfortable. It also strengthened my ability to navigate difficult conversations with professionalism and accountability.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define civic and community involvement as taking an active role in serving others by giving time, attention, and effort where it is needed most. It means staying aware of the needs within the community and being willing to step in and support those needs in meaningful ways.

Over the next five years, I hope to become more involved in the Tyler community by serving where there is the greatest need. As Tyler continues to grow, I see opportunities to support areas such as community development, housing, and programs that invest in the younger generation through involvement and education. I want to contribute where I can make a practical difference and help strengthen the community as a whole.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect to utilize the Leadership Tyler experience as an opportunity to grow my understanding of the community, build meaningful connections, and gain insight into the challenges and opportunities within Tyler. I want to learn from others, broaden my perspective, and bring back knowledge that I can apply in both my professional role and community involvement.

I believe I bring a strong sense of responsibility, adaptability, and a willingness to step in where needed. My leadership experience began early through involvement in leadership and career development opportunities, as well as my agricultural background, which instilled in me the value of hard work, strong work ethic, and being willing to step up when needed. Through my current role managing multiple operations, properties, and financial responsibilities, I’ve strengthened my ability to stay organized, problem-solve, and follow through. I bring a practical, team-oriented mindset and a genuine desire to contribute, which I believe will add value to the class experience.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area is how the community continues to grow and connect as it expands. Tyler is a growing community with strong assets and a spirit of philanthropy that supports development. However, there is an opportunity to improve the connection and flow between different areas of the city. From South Tyler’s retail and higher-end development, to the fairgrounds in Northwest Tyler, the parks and golf courses throughout, the medical district, and the historic downtown, each area offers something valuable—but they often feel separate rather than connected.

Creating stronger connections between these areas would help unify the community, support local growth, and improve overall accessibility and experience for current and future residents. I would love the opportunity to become more involved and learn about the different ways I can serve, while gaining a better understanding of how to support Tyler’s continued growth in a meaningful and connected way.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

In my day-to-day responsibilities, I often find that situations can arise where integrity could easily be compromised, or at least tested. At HGR, we value our employees and have built strong relationships and a culture of trust, which creates a positive work environment. However, in my role overseeing financials, I am responsible for reviewing and auditing every expense that leaves the company, from fuel receipts and material purchases to subcontractor costs.

This can sometimes create tension, as it would be easier to avoid asking questions, especially when working with people I respect and trust. However, I have learned that maintaining integrity means doing my job fully and consistently. I continue to ask questions, seek clarification, and ensure accuracy, regardless of who is involved.

Over time, this approach has become second nature. I have learned that integrity is not about convenience—it is about accountability, consistency, and doing what is right to protect the organization and those within it.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Civic and community involvement starts by first identifying a root issue and this cannot happen unless one integrates themselves into a community, becomes a part of it, and ultimately understands it. Leadership Tyler, as well as other aspects of the community I am involved in, would bring insight and understanding of our needs. Although my 4 years in Tyler is relatively short, I have identified some areas I feel passionate about. Fatherlessness is an epidemic and although not something unique to Tyler, is an area that certainly stirs my heart. I define fatherlessness in the literal term of those without biological fathers as well as those without strong male role models or those simply without guidance. I believe fatherlessness is the etiology of so many societal, emotional, and mental issues. I see the largest impact here in our youth. My plan in the next 5 years is to better understand our city and involve myself with my time and resources in helping to bridge the gap of fatherlessness through Tyler Young Life and Mentoring Alliance.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

Growing up without a father created many disadvantages but also galvanized me to understand the importance of leadership. By the grace of God alone, I concluded as an early adult that I needed to intentionally pursue change lest I fall into the similar patterns of fatherlessness I was prone to. I recognized the importance of mentorship and sought it fervently throughout college and medical school. I pursued leadership opportunities to expand my skills knowing that one day I would take on the greatest leadership role in my life – a husband and father. I know the direct and indirect effects of a lack of leadership, the dysfunction it can create in a family and in a community, and instead of allowing it to destroy me, it has become kindling to a flame. Therefore, I will continue to refine my leadership and seek mentorship so that each one my children will never know a home without a father.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

With my occupation as an ophthalmologist, I’ve always hoped to use my resources for impact beyond business. The obvious primary employment of this is through taking care of the people that make up the community where I work, live, and play. However, I know that there is potential for even farther reach. In the past 4 years, I’ve tried hard to form relationships with other medical and eye specialists in Tyler and the greater East Texas region. Additionally, I have been able to forge inroads with other humanitarian groups in Texas who share my sentiments. With such a combination of people, skills, and resources, I have a vision where no underserved patient lacks eye care in East Texas. It’s a bold mission but I believe if each one of us just gives a small portion of our giftings, it’s very much possible. My goal is “One Vision – United for Good.” My hope is that Leadership Tyler will be one more avenue to create relationships and a locking of arms for just that – one vision, united for good.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

There only two types of surgeons who don’t have any complications: the ones who don’t operate and the liars. Complications are an inevitable part of surgery if you do enough surgery. Each one is heartbreaking, hurts deeply, and to some extent, forces one to question themselves. I was involved in a case where the outcome would determine our institution’s practice patterns. We were attempting a proof of concept that we had been promoting for months and finally got approval to proceed. There was pressure to ensure this succeeded, not just for creating practice patterns, but also for our reputation. One aspect of the procedure involved placing specialized intraocular implants. The case went smoothly, however, on the patient’s post-op visit, their vision was slightly off target, a small enough miss that overall didn't significantly bother the patient. With further investigation, we realized the wrong implants were used. It would have been very easy to chalk up the slight miss to a variety of reasons and still conclude the case as a successful outcome, solidifying our proof of concept. At the cost of our reputation, we decided to be honest with the patient and offer correction. Our integrity remained intact, and ultimately, the patient had the very best outcome.
