Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define it as the way a person contributes to growth & betterment of their community through service, leadership, volunteering, supporting the local non profits, event participation & involvement.

Over the next 5 years, I expect to be actively involved in community & volunteer work focused on grooming the next generation of women leaders. Through Polished Protocol, my goal is to expand into a non profit that offers workshops, mentorship opportunities & resources for young girls and teens that would focus on confidence, communication, leadership, etiquette, self-presentation, kindness, character development & social responsibility. These are the skills that I believe are essential for helping them to grow into poised, capable & purpose driven leaders. I believe that investing my time, experience & resources in the young women of Tyler is one of the most valuable ways that I can serve the community. And I am just so excited for this!! It's going to happen!

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I plan to use my LT experience as both a learning opportunity & a launching pad for continued community leadership. The more involved I become in Tyler, I realize how much more there is to learn, support and contribute to. I look forward to learning more about the people, organizations, & needs of Tyler. I plan to strengthen my leadership skills so that I am a more informed & intentional leader by being better equipped to promote & support businesses& events that actively contribute to a better Tyler. Unique qualities that I will bring are initiative, creativity, heart for service, & a genuine desire to connect people with purpose. I look for ways to organize, encourage, and bring ideas to life. I have a passion for helping others grow in confidence. I believe that we are shaped by the people we surround ourselves with, and I am thrilled to learn alongside other purpose-driven leaders while also contributing my energy, perspective and commitment to serving Tyler well. Whoop Whoop!!!

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

This question has me all excited! One opportunity for change is expanding access to intentional leadership, confidence, & life-skills development opportunities for young girls & teens. While there may already be organizations doing fantastic work in this area, I believe there is always room for opportunities that will help prepare the next generation of leaders. Today's girls need more than academics. They benefit from guidance in communication, confidence, professionalism, being socially aware, the importance of self-presentation, kindness, character development & leadership; all of which contribute to how they see themselves, how they interact with others, and how prepared they will feel when stepping through any door and into any room. I would be active through Polished Protocol by developing workshops, mentorship opportunities & resources that support girls & teens in each of these areas. I would also hope to partner with schools, homeschool groups, nonprofits, and women's organizations to complement the work already being done in the community. I wouldn't want to duplicate efforts, but to contribute to them by helping create more opportunities for the young women in Tyler to feel equipped, encouraged & prepared to lead with confidence & character! So exciting!

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

Actually, something happened this week! An insured called in & believed her coverage had been matched when she moved policies to our agency. She discovered there was a difference & was extremely frustrated & had lost trust in us. In that moment, it would have been extremely easy to minimize the issue, defend the sales agent & agency or to shift responsibility, however, the right thing to do was: slow down, listen, review the facts & handle the situation with honesty & professionalism. I reached out to the sales agent to collect the original documents, reviewed the customer's concerns with him, & focused on giving her a clear and truthful response rather than simply trying to protect the agency from criticism. Transparency over convenience. Acknowledging her frustration, committed to reviewing her full portfolio, & approached the situation as an opportunity to restore trust. The experience reinforced that integrity is not only about avoiding wrongdoing; it is about being willing to take ownership, seek the truth, & do what's right even when the conversation is uncomfortable. I believe trust is built when people know you will be honest, accountable & fair. Especially in difficult situations.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I would love to be more involved with community outreach projects regarding children, as well as more community outreach in general - this is what I foresee myself being involved with in the next five years as this is a passion of mine. I define this as any benefit to you provide to the community outside of obligation.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect to utilize this experience to further my connections within the community, for the further benefit of the community. I also want to gain more knowledge about resources that I may not have known about previously. The community is filled with various needs, and the more connections we make, the more ability we have to adequately uplift those around us. I believe that I will bring perspective and nuanced insight to the Leadership Tyler Class.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

I think that more training for the police and sheriff's office regarding mental health concerns, and more training in the mental health clinics regarding substance usage and criminal/legal matters would bridge the communication gap between these two groups and further benefit the community as a whole regarding care. I have previous taught training courses with PD regarding the mental health aspect of care, I would love to continue to do so for the community generally.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

I have felt that prior, whether this be due to disagreements between myself and other departments within the Andrews Center, or other facilities/entities. I felt that pressure - but in those moments I lean on the policies and procedures from the state, and from my clinic. I push forward with the best advocacy for the people that I serve - and utilize these things to help protect their well-being.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Civic involvement, to me, is the deliberate use of one's professional capabilities, networks, and time to strengthen the institutions that make a community function, including schools, hospitals, nonprofits, economic-development bodies, and the businesses that employ neighbors. My current civic work reflects this: I serve as volunteer Chief Scientific Officer at the Alzheimer's Alliance of Smith County, supporting research strategy for our 3,000-participant community, and as Community/Volunteer Faculty in the UT Tyler Department of Neurology. Over the next five years, I expect to expand engagement in three directions: deepening cognitive-health advocacy as East Texas faces rising dementia prevalence; contributing to STEM and workforce development for K-12 students in Smith County, particularly in manufacturing and AI fields where Tyler's economy is positioned to grow; and supporting entrepreneurs and physician-scientists who choose East Texas as their professional home, as I did. As Asperity Industries matures, I also expect to participate in regional manufacturing and economic-development conversations, specifically workforce training, AI adoption, and supply-chain resilience, that shape Tyler's long-term competitiveness.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect to use Leadership Tyler in two complementary ways: to deepen my understanding of Tyler's institutional fabric; so my contributions through Asperity Industries and my volunteer work at the Alzheimer's Alliance and UT Tyler are informed by the real architecture of how decisions get made; and to build lasting relationships with peers from sectors I don't naturally encounter, so the next twenty years of professional and civic engagement happen alongside people I trust and learn from.
I bring three uncommon qualities to the class. First, a physician-scientist perspective that connects healthcare, research, and applied technology is useful when discussing health, education, or the workforce. Second, an immigrant founder's perspective on what makes Tyler attractive as a place to build a business and raise a family, which informs conversations about economic development and talent retention. Third, an AI and robotics background is increasingly relevant to East Texas's manufacturing, healthcare, and education sectors; these technologies will reshape over the next decade. Combined with a willingness to listen first and contribute thoughtfully, these qualities position me to learn from the cohort and add to it.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

The largest opportunity I see in Tyler/Smith County is preparing the regional workforce for the AI and automation transition already reshaping how SMB manufacturers, healthcare providers, and service businesses operate. Within 5-10 years, welders, electronics technicians, machine operators, nurses, and administrative staff who power East Texas's economy will work alongside AI tools and partially automated systems. Communities that prepare workers and employers for this transition will retain talent, attract investment, and grow; communities that don't will lose the next decade.

I see this as a complement, not a threat. The question is whether Tyler's workforce, schools, community colleges, and employers move together toward shared technical fluency, or fragment.

I expect to be personally engaged through three channels: continuing to build Asperity Industries as a Tyler-headquartered AI-robotics company; advocating for K-12 and Tyler Junior College STEM curriculum partnerships with employers; and bringing my technical and physician-scientist perspective to civic conversations across the Chamber, UT Tyler, AASC, and other bodies. Leadership Tyler is the most direct path to join those conversations with the relationships and context to be useful.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

During my time leading Neuroreef Labs, our prior healthcare-AI company, I faced pressure from a stakeholder to characterize a research result in a way that overstated what the data actually showed. The pressure wasn't blunt; it came as suggested phrasing, framings, and emphasis that would have made a marketing-friendly story but blurred the scientific honesty I owed to patients, clinicians, and partners who would rely on what I said. I handled it by separating the two interests cleanly. I declined the suggested framing, produced a written technical summary stating exactly what the data showed and what it did not with appropriate confidence levels, and circulated it as the version of record. I then prepared a separate business-facing summary (accurate within the limits the data supported). Both had to be honest; the technical version was non-negotiable.

The stakeholder initially pushed back. I held the position. The relationship continued on different terms.

The lesson I carry: in technical and clinical work, the integrity question rarely arrives as one dramatic choice. It arrives as repeated small decisions about phrasing, emphasis, and omission. The discipline is to recognize them as decisions, not defaults, and to decide them deliberately.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Throughout my provisional year with the Junior League of Tyler, I completed a total of 7- 3rd shifts- which means that I devoted 21 hours to JLT and various local nonprofits.

Mistletoe and Magic, Girl Power, and Touch A Truck are in league events that I volunteered at. Honorable mention is The Arc of Smith County- this was my provisional class project.

Angel Layettes, Discovery Science Place,
The Gold Network of East Texas are nonprofits that we partnered with that I had the opportunity of helping at different events.

Within the next 5 years, I plan on still being an active member of Junior League holding several positions of leadership. Eventually, my goal is to Chair a committee.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I will utilize my Leadership Tyler experience by applying what I have learned in day to day life, whether I am coaching my athletes (cheer), in the office or serving on a committee with the City or even volunteering with nonprofits. What I will gain through LT will supply me with a lifetime of knowledge and understanding. Like the gift that keeps on giving- not to mention the people I will have the privilege of learning from.

Qualities that I will bring to Class 40…
I bring high energy and genuine joy to every space I am a part of. I am a deeply passionate individual who fully commits to whatever I am involved in, giving my whole heart and consistent effort. I bring enthusiasm that encourages collaboration and engagement. I am very intentional and detail oriented. Organization and planning are 2 of my key traits. I love taking initiative. I also value growth and showing up in a way where I make a meaningful impact.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One opportunity for change I see in the Tyler/Smith County area is improving community engagement and unity. Right now, especially with the election happening, it feels like people are very divided and quick to turn against each other because of political views. It’s honestly sad because it takes away from what our community could be if we focused more on understanding and working together.

A way I could personally be engaged in this is by continuing to stay involved in local organizations and volunteer work that actually brings people together in a positive way. During my time with the Junior League of Tyler, I’ve seen firsthand how service can connect people from different backgrounds when the focus is on helping the community instead of dividing it. In the future, I also want to continue growing in civic involvement and possibly even on City Council one day.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

When I was 15, I worked during the summer at Willowbrook Country Club as a pool server. Even though I was a minor, the job environment sometimes placed me in situations that required a lot of maturity and awareness. One of the bartenders, who was significantly older, repeatedly pressured me to drink alcohol, even though he knew I was underage. This made me feel uncomfortable and placed me in a position where I was being pushed to compromise both my personal values and the law. At first, I tried to avoid him and dismiss the situation, but I eventually realized that staying silent was not the right choice. I decided to report the behavior to my manager because it was inappropriate and could have potentially been happening to other employees as well.
That experience reinforced for me the importance of protecting my integrity, trusting my judgment, and addressing situations directly when something is not right, even if it is uncomfortable.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Civic and community involvement to me, means intentionally engaging in activities that strengthen both the community as a whole and the individuals within it. It is the act of pouring into others, showing up with purpose, and serving beyond yourself. As a servant leader, I lead with others in mind first. I believe that advocacy, compassion, and presence are some of the most meaningful ways to give back. This includes being a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves and for those that may not yet realize they need one.

My passion for service is rooted in lived experience. As a mother of child with Type 1 diabetes, I have learned that the answers are not always clear, resources not always accessible, and many families navigate challenges in silence. This has strengthened my commitment to healthcare advocacy, education and ensuring that undeserved communities have access to the support they need.

I want to serve children, the elderly and those who are often overlooked. I believe in meeting people where they are, understanding their needs by being present and helping them see that leadership is possible regardless of where they started. I am especially drawn to youth mentorship, because empowering future leaders can transform the trajectory of an entire community.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I want this experience to deepen my connection to the place I call home. I’m looking for opportunities to learn more about my community, to understand lived experiences of others whose stories differ from my own. As well as build relationships that stretch me in the best ways. For a long time, I used to hide in rooms because I wasn’t as outgoing as others but over time, I learned that my perspective and ideas matter. I don’t always know how to break the ice, but I show up anyway with an open mind, open heart and genuine desire to reach others. I’ve learned that not every situation needs a room full of extroverts, sometimes it needs someone who listens first, pays attention to what isn’t being said and steps in with intention. That is the kind of presence I bring. My leadership is shaped by real life. By stepping into healthcare simply as a mother trying to provide for her family and discovering over 13 years that it had become my purpose. I didn’t (and don’t) always have the answers, but I had the will. That same determination guides me now. Through Leadership Tyler, I hope to grow alongside others who care about this community, to learn their perspectives, and to find new ways I can contribute. I want this experience to help me see where I can make a difference and serve.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

I believe strengthening access to resources for underserved families particularly in the areas of healthcare navigation, financial literacy, and youth support. Our community has incredible assets, but many residents still struggle to understand or access the systems meant to serve them. This gap creates avoidable barriers, especially for families facing language challenges, chronic health conditions, or limited transportation. I see this as an opportunity because improving access doesn’t just help individuals it strengthens the entire community. When people understand how to navigate healthcare, education, and social services, they experience better outcomes. It also builds trust between institutions (hospitals, schools) and the people they serve. I could engage in this work by using my background to help bridge those gaps. I have spent my career advocating for patients, simplifying complex processes, and ensuring people receive the care and support they need. I can contribute by partnering with local organizations, mentoring youth, supporting community education efforts, and helping design more accessible pathways for families who feel overwhelmed by the systems around them. My goal is to be part of creating a community where every resident has a fair chance to thrive.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

I once had a close friend who was going through a divorce and custody battle. During the process, I was asked to testify on the father’s behalf regarding his interactions with the children being I was close to the family. From my own direct experience, he had always been appropriate, attentive, and engaged. When my friend learned I had been called as a witness, she began sharing stories from their past and insisted that I bring those situations up in court. The problem was that none of those incidents were things I had personally witnessed or ever heard of. While I understood that people can behave differently behind closed doors, she was asking me to testify to things I could not truthfully confirm. Doing so would have compromised my integrity and potentially harmed the children’s future. I chose to stand firmly in the truth and only speak to what I had actually seen. It ultimately damaged the friendship, but I felt at peace knowing I did the right thing. I would rather lose someone who expects me to lie than compromise my character or the fairness of a legal process involving children.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define civic & community involvement as intentionally investing my time, talents, and resources to help others succeed while strengthening the community we all share. True leadership is not about position or recognition, it is about serving others, building relationships, & creating opportunities for people to grow & thrive together.

Over the next five years, I expect to continue serving in leadership roles that focus on community development, leadership training, mentorship, & personal growth. Through organizations such as Toastmasters, local nonprofits, professional associations, faith-based initiatives, and community events, I plan to help develop future leaders, encourage civic engagement, and create meaningful connections between individuals, businesses, and organizations.

I am especially passionate about helping people discover their potential, improve their communication and leadership skills, and become active contributors to the community. I believe strong communities are built when leaders step forward, serve others, and work collaboratively toward a shared vision. My goal is to continue using my experience as a coach, speaker, mentor, and community volunteer to encourage others, foster leadership, and contribute to a thriving Tyler area for generations to come.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect to utilize my Leadership Tyler experience to deepen my understanding of the challenges, opportunities, and resources that shape our community, while building meaningful relationships with other leaders who are committed to making a difference. I believe leadership is a team sport, and I look forward to learning from the diverse perspectives, experiences, and expertise of my classmates.

One of the unique qualities I will bring to the class is my ability to connect people, ideas, and opportunities. As a coach, speaker, mentor, and community volunteer, I have a unique approach and interest in helping individuals discover their strengths, develop confidence, and take action. I enjoy creating environments where people feel encouraged, valued, and empowered to contribute their best.

I also bring a positive, service-oriented mindset and a genuine belief that strong communities are built when leaders collaborate rather than compete. My goal is to contribute energy, curiosity, encouragement, and a willingness to serve while learning how I can make a greater impact in Tyler and East Texas. I hope to use the experience not only to grow as a leader myself, but to help develop and inspire other leaders throughout our community.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One opportunity for change in this area is strengthening the pipeline of emerging leaders & increasing collaboration between businesses, nonprofits, schools, faith communities, & civic organizations. We have many talented individuals/organizations doing great work, but there is an opportunity to create stronger connections, develop future leaders, & encourage greater community engagement across generations.

I believe leadership development & communication skills are foundational to addressing many of the challenges & opportunities our community faces. When people learn to communicate effectively, build relationships, & work toward a common purpose, communities become stronger, more resilient, & better equipped to solve problems together.

I plan to be personally engaged by continuing to mentor, coach,& develop leaders through community organizations, professional associations, volunteer service, & leadership training opportunities. I focus on helping people discover their strengths, build confidence, & find meaningful ways to contribute. By bringing people together, encouraging collaboration, & investing in leadership development, I believe we can help create a thriving community where individuals, families, businesses & organizations all have the opportunity to succeed.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

One of the most challenging leadership decisions I have faced occurred while serving in a leadership role with Rose Toasters Toastmasters Club. At the time, the club was struggling with membership growth & was at risk of suspension. There was significant pressure to retain members, regardless of their level of participation/alignment with the club’s values and expectations.

After several coaching conversations & attempts to help one member align with the club’s mission, it became clear that their actions were creating challenges for the culture & growth of the organization. While making an exception may have seemed like the easier short-term fix, it would have required compromising the standards, accountability, & integrity that our leadership team believed were essential to the club’s future success.

We made the difficult decision to part ways respectfully & professionally. It was not a popular decision with everyone, but it was the right one.

That experience reinforced my belief that integrity requires consistency, especially when circumstances make compromise tempting. The club has experienced renewed growth, stronger engagement, & improved culture. Today, Rose Toasters is recognized as a thriving club & model for leadership/membership development within our district.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Growing up in Tyler shaped how I view community involvement. To me, it means giving time and effort back to the people and places that helped shape you. It means showing up consistently, building relationships, and doing your part to help your community move forward.

As I have grown in my career, I have come to see leadership as more than results. It also means serving people, helping teams work better together, and creating opportunities for others to grow. Through mentoring employees, improving processes, and working across functions, I have learned that meaningful impact often comes from steady involvement rather than big moments.

Over the next five years, I want to be more involved in leadership development, education, and community growth in Tyler. I am especially interested in mentoring young professionals, supporting workforce development, and strengthening the connection between local businesses and the community. Tyler is home for me, so giving back here is personal.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect Leadership Tyler to give me a broader understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the city while allowing me to build relationships with leaders from different industries and backgrounds. I want to use that experience to become more engaged in the community and contribute in a more informed way to Tyler’s growth.

My background has given me experience in both technical and business leadership roles in the refining industry. I have worked across functions, helped teams solve complex problems, improved processes, and mentored others. Those experiences have taught me the value of clear communication, accountability, and trust, especially when people with different perspectives are working toward the same goal.

I would bring a practical, grounded perspective to the Leadership Tyler class. I like learning from other people, working through challenges collaboratively, and finding realistic solutions. I also bring a strong work ethic, an analytical mindset, and a genuine appreciation for the Tyler community. Most importantly, I want to keep growing as a leader who can make a positive impact through both my work and service.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One of the biggest opportunities for change in Tyler and Smith County is strengthening the connection between education, workforce development, and local industry. As the area grows, there is a real need to help more people see a future for themselves here and to make sure local employers have access to strong talent.

I believe there is a strong opportunity for more collaboration between schools, colleges, trade programs, and local businesses so students and young professionals can better understand the career paths available in East Texas. Too often, people think they need to leave to build a successful career, when strong opportunities already exist here.

Through my professional experience, I have seen how much mentorship, training, and leadership development can shape both careers and organizations. That is where I could see myself being personally engaged. I want to be more involved in mentorship and workforce development efforts that help young professionals connect with local industries, local leaders, and long-term opportunities in this area.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

One time I felt pressure to compromise my integrity was during a forecasting and business planning discussion. In my role, leadership depends on realistic assumptions, but there can be pressure to present numbers in the best possible light. In that situation, I was being pushed toward a more optimistic view than I believed the data supported.

I knew it would have been easier to soften the risks, adjust assumptions, and make the plan look stronger on paper. Instead, I stepped back, reviewed the data, and made sure I could clearly explain the risks. I communicated my concerns directly and respectfully, and I explained that I could not support a forecast I did not believe was realistic.

It was not the easiest conversation, but it led to a more honest and useful plan. We moved toward assumptions that better reflected reality and gave decision-makers a clearer picture of what the team would need to deliver. That experience reinforced that integrity means giving a truthful answer, even when it creates tension, because others will have to live with the outcome.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

To me, civic involvement is a profound sense of civic responsibility. It is more than individual volunteerism; it is the deliberate construction of collaborative networks and the practice of systemic problem-solving. A community experiences its most resilient growth when diverse stakeholders are actively included, breaking down silos to tackle shared challenges together. True civic engagement means moving past temporary fixes to build sustainable frameworks where we take ownership of our community’s future for the next generation. Over the next five years, my involvement will focus on economic development, tourism, and elevating our regional quality of life. While my professional role allows me to influence the analysis and funding of major capital projects, I recognize that true enrichment requires strong bridges between the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Because I cannot serve directly on municipal boards, I intend to focus my energy on joining the boards of our local chamber and area non-profits dedicated to regional growth. Through these roles, I will act as a steward for initiatives that drive sustainable expansion. By pairing strategic municipal insight with intentional non-profit leadership, I aim to foster the networks necessary to ensure Tyler remains vibrant.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I intend to utilize the Leadership Tyler experience to bridge gaps in my current perspective and foster community enrichment through collective impact. While my professional life involves high-stakes municipal analysis, I recognize that the most resilient decisions occur when no voices are overlooked. I plan to leverage this program’s network to find unique perspectives that both add to and challenge my thinking. By building relationships that transcend occupational silos, I can ensure that the results I strive for in my work reflect the actual needs of our diverse citizenry. To the Leadership Tyler class, I bring a unique lens focused on the intersection of strategic theory and practical execution. I naturally look past surface-level symptoms to identify the underlying patterns within complex systems. This allows me to propose solutions that are not just "quick fixes," but sustainable, long-term improvements. I am a participant who balances high standards for excellence with a genuine desire for collaborative harmony. My ability to remain levelheaded and flexible during uncertainty allows me to help a group navigate the confusion of a difficult challenge without losing momentum. Ultimately, I offer a blend of fact-based logic and a persistent drive to see our community thrive.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

I see a vital opportunity to formalize the link between quality-of-life infrastructure and economic development to ensure the long-term vitality of Tyler and Smith County. Historically, these have been treated as separate priorities; however, modern economic trends show they are inextricably linked. As high-growth companies evaluate locations, they prioritize communities that offer superior amenities to attract top-tier talent. If we do not intentionally strengthen this connection, our region risks losing its competitive edge. I believe that building a vibrant community and a robust economy are simultaneous goals. By investing in regional attractions and cultural assets, we aren't just improving our daily lives—we are building a magnet for capital investment. Personally, I am positioned to engage with this through a blend of professional oversight and informed stewardship. In my municipal role, I can ensure capital initiatives are evaluated through a systemic lens, considering how every project impacts our future vitality. Furthermore, through leadership roles in local chambers and quality-of-life non-profits, I intend to act as a strategic bridge—utilizing analytical thinking to align public infrastructure with private-sector growth.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

In municipal administration, integrity is often tested by subtle pressures to bypass established systems for convenience. I experienced this when a senior leader from an external organization pressured me to accept a critical document well after a strictly enforced deadline, arguing that the partnership’s importance outweighed "administrative technicalities." Granting an exception would have compromised the systemic equity of my office, where all stakeholders must be held to the same standard. Handling this required a balance of professional firmness and analytical problem-solving. I stood my ground and declined the late submission to maintain the integrity of our process. However, I pivoted to an investigation of the root cause, working with the other organization to identify where the communication breakdown occurred. By analyzing the failure, I transitioned the conflict into a constructive opportunity for growth. I facilitated the implementation of new notification systems to ensure such a breakdown would not recur. This approach allowed me to uphold my commitment to policy integrity while strengthening the inter-organizational relationship. It demonstrated that integrity is about protecting standards while actively working to make it more transparent for everyone it serves.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define civic & community involvement as actively contributing to the well-being of a community by helping people become informed, engaged, & connected to opportunities that improve their quality of life. While volunteering is an important part of civic involvement, I believe it also includes creating spaces for dialogue, encouraging participation, & building partnerships that address community needs.
Over the next five years, I hope to continue creating opportunities that bring people together and strengthen our community. One initiative I am particularly passionate about is the community baby showers, which provide resources, education, and support to expecting and new parents. I would love to expand this effort to reach more families and connect them with organizations and services that can help them thrive. I also hope to use the Leadership Tyler experience to help grow initiatives like this through new partnerships and collaboration.
Above all, I will continue to be a servant leader who listens to understand, builds bridges across differences, and works to make my community stronger. Whether through family-focused initiatives, community forums, mentorship, or board service, I look forward to learning & creating opportunities for others to engage, grow, and thrive in Tyler.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I see myself as a connector. Professionally, I work in affordable housing and community development, collaborating with developers, nonprofits, financial institutions, & public-sector partners to expand opportunities for communities. Personally, I have developed initiatives that encourage civic engagement, managed a school board campaign, & helped lead economic development programs focused on financial empowerment & community growth. These experiences have reinforced the importance of collaboration in creating lasting community impact.

I hope to use my Leadership Tyler experience to deepen my understanding of how different sectors of our community work together and strengthen my ability to connect people & organizations around shared community goals.

One of the unique qualities I would bring to the class is my ability to engage with people from a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives, & industries. Through my work & community involvement, I have learned how to build relationships, facilitate meaningful conversations, & find common ground among diverse groups. I believe the strongest communities are built when people who may not normally sit at the same table come together around a shared purpose, & I look forward to bringing that perspective to the Leadership Tyler class.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One of the greatest opportunities for change in Tyler/Smith County is increasing civic engagement & helping residents become more involved in the decisions that shape our Too often, important conversations about local government, education, economic development, bonds, & community resources happen without broad public understanding or involvement.
When people lack access to information, they may feel disconnected from the decision-making process or uncertain about how to make their voices heard. Strong communities are built when residents are informed, engaged, & have opportunities for meaningful dialogue.
This belief led me to launch the Bridging the Gap Community Forum, a series designed to connect residents with local leaders & create space for conversations about issues affecting our community. Through these forums, I have seen firsthand how access to information empowers people to become more involved & invested in Tyler's future. I will continue to support this opportunity by expanding community engagement efforts, creating additional forums & educational opportunities, & making information more accessible. By building stronger connections between residents & decision-makers, we can foster trust, encourage civic participation, & create a more informed & connected community.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

Growing up, I attended private school and was often one of the only Black girls in my class. At a young age, I became aware that fitting in sometimes meant minimizing parts of myself. There was an unspoken pressure to change the way I spoke, avoid conversations about my experiences, and downplay aspects of my identity that made me different from my peers.

For a time, I found myself code-switching and carefully navigating spaces in an effort to be accepted. While no one directly told me to change who I was, I felt pressure to conform in ways that did not align with my authentic self. As I grew older, I realized that compromising my identity was not a sustainable path to belonging. I learned that authenticity and connection are not mutually exclusive. By staying true to my values and experiences, I learned to build meaningful relationships across differences without sacrificing my sense of self.

That experience shaped my understanding of integrity. I learned that integrity is not only about making ethical decisions, but it is also about having the courage to remain authentic when there is pressure to conform. Today, that lesson continues to guide how I lead, communicate, and engage with diverse communities.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Civic involvement is what tethers shared responsibility for the well-being and future of a community. It is the willingness and duty to invest time, resources, talents, leadership, and service into nurturing communities in ways that help the help individuals, families, and business grow and thrive together, and we all have a responsibility in this involvement.

As a single mom to a high school student, I am in a “waiting” season of my life where I hyperaware of precious and fleeting years – much of my time over the next three years will be dedicated to creating those special memories that will last our lifetime. To reflect a quote I heard recently, "when the Lord calls you to a season of 'waiting,' do what waiters do – serve others." While I may not know all that I will be called to do in civic engagement, I know the value on continuing to invest in people, communities, and opportunities to serve and support others. My only expectation is holding myself accountable to the duties of servant leadership in the community I call home.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I aspire to bring a unique perspective shaped by both my professional and personal experiences rooted in community engagement, healthcare, and regional growth across East Texas. Five years ago, I relocated to Tyler to support executive leadership, community stakeholders, and state officials involved in establishing the region’s first medical school. That experience afforded an exceptional vantage point of what can be accomplished when a community collectively invests in education, workforce development, healthcare, and long-term regional advancement, as well as taught me how to navigate the challenges related to change and advancement in second-tier communities. Having lived in East Texas for more than 25 years through a nontraditional career path, I also recognize many of the qualities and opportunities within this region that are sometimes taken for granted. I hope to bring an ability to connect new people in the community, encourage renewed community engagement, and help both long-time residents and newcomers network together through the exceptional traditions and values, while tethering future potential of East Texas. Leadership Tyler would further strengthen my ability to serve, connect, and invest in the continue growth of the community.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One opportunity for growth within Tyler and Smith County is creating more intentional ways for individuals and families relocating to the area to feel connected, welcomed, and engaged within the community – regardless of whether they hold formal leadership positions within organizations. While East Texas offers extraordinary values, traditions, and community pride, many newcomers and nontraditional families can find it difficult to naturally integrate into established networks and civic circles, outside of their employment. As a result, many talented individuals remain disconnected from opportunities to serve, engage, and invest in the community simply because they do not know where or how to connect. I believe there is an opportunity to create more structured and accessible community engagement experiences similar to the relationship-building environment Leadership Tyler provides but designed for individuals and families who are new to the region. Whether through monthly gatherings, community introductions, civic engagement opportunities, or partnerships with local employers relocating talent into the areas, these efforts could help strengthen belonging, encourage civic participation, and ultimately retain valuable time, talents, and resources that are being overlooked.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

While serving as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), I experienced a time when I felt pressure to align with recommendations made by social workers and attorneys with significantly more professional experience within this system. As the child approached her 18th birthday during her final year of high school, the recommendation was made for her to “age out” out of this system. Although I respected the professional experience of those involved, it was my responsibility to advocate honestly for what I witnessed to be in the child's best interest - continued state support and protection until she completed her education and received her diploma. During the court hearing, I respectfully presented facts related to my concerns to the judge and district attorneys despite understanding that my position was not universally supported. The judge ruled in favor of the child remaining in state’s care through graduation. This experience reinforced my belief that integrity requires taking the time to fully understand the roles we sign up to do, especially the challenges that might arise, and have the courage to bring forth unpopular, difficult conversations, even if that means standing alone and facing adversity among peers. Integrity does not align with unintended rules and loopholes.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

One of my favorite quotes states, “If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.” Humans are not meant to live in silos; we need a network of people, services, and places to thrive and grow. I define community involvement as reciprocal participation within a citizen’s local area of residence; the heart of community involvement is its’ reciprocity. Every community member has a give and take within their community. Each community member has strengths to give the community and in turn can benefit from others’ strengths. Community involvement can be formal - a city council seat, or it can be informal - eating a meal at a local restaurant. Currently, I am a member of Junior League of Tyler and in training at CASA for Kids of East Texas. Through my position at UT Tyler, I serve on a committee with TJC and The City of Tyler to plan our annual day of community service, The East Texas Big Event. Last year, we had a record number of service sites and over 450 student volunteers. Within the next 5 years, my goal is to move into leadership positions within the organizations I currently serve. I hope to serve as a committee chair in JLT and sit on non-profit boards. My desire is to not only volunteer but also be involved in the decision-making processes.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

Similar to my definition of community involvement described above, my goal for my LT experience is fostering reciprocal partnerships and connections. I hope this experience helps me know myself more deeply, know Tyler more deeply, and equips me to develop others. The best leaders are the ones who know themselves, develop others, and understand the community they serve. I oversee the development of student leaders as well as full-time staff. I hope to utilize this experience to enhance my management skills. I also want to utilize this experience to intentionally get out of my “UT Tyler bubble.” I hope to strengthen the partnership with UT Tyler and the community by learning about areas that I may not get to interact with in my normal routine. In addition to what I would gain from this experience, I am also eager to impact my other cohort members’ experiences as well. Professionally, I bring over ten years of education experience and expertise; I have experiences working in Baylor University Athletics, K – 12 teaching, and Student Affairs at UT Tyler. Personally, I bring a playfulness, openness, and warmth to spaces. I love getting to know others; my warmth can make others feel at ease. I hope to bring my expertise and personality to my fellow cohort members.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One of the pillars of the current Strategic Plan at UT Tyler is “Serve East Texas.” Serving East Texas is a priority for me professionally and personally. An opportunity for change is growing the connection between UT Tyler and the Tyler community. For a variety of reasons, UT Tyler can feel disconnected from the city of Tyler. Students often don’t know what the Tyler community has to offer, and many community members don’t know about the initiatives and resources at UT Tyler. “Wow, I didn’t know UT Tyler did that!” is a common phrase. Recently, at an event for a non-profit organization, they mentioned they couldn’t hold their meetings on UT Tyler’s campus because we don’t have round tables. I cringed because we not only have round tables, but we have space that organizations can reserve. While this interaction was small, it illustrates the lack of connection between UT Tyler and the community. Many great community engagement partnerships exist, but these can continue to grow. Partnerships also take trust, consistency, and time. I can be engaged in this opportunity by helping bridge the gap both ways. Using my experience in LT to grow natural partnerships while also learning more about the community that I can bring back to students and colleagues.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

It can be easy to think of integrity as a large event: cheating or stealing. However, authentic personal integrity is making small, barely noticeable, choices every day. Integrity is holding boundaries with yourself and others and not compromising your limits to get ahead, avoid conflict, or get someone to like you. As a recovering people pleaser, these small choices can be extraordinarily difficult. When I worked in Baylor Athletics, I was there at a time of major organizational change and restructuring; I was tasked with overseeing full-time veteran staff (at age 22). This resulted in conflict both personally and professionally. My first instinct was to run from it. I had no experience managing people, much less people older than me, and I was not confident as a leader. Under the mentorship of another leader, I evaluated what my core values were and our unit’s team values. One of my core values is honesty, and I realized that running from the conflict and not saying how I felt was a lie of omission. I began to have team meetings with the employees, build trust and boundaries, and talk openly about frustrations. I realized that running from conflict was not fair to the other parties involved. I learned about vulnerability and holding integrity even when it's uncomfortable.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define civic community and involvement as using my time, skills, and resources to make Tyler a better place. It means integrating yourself into your community and assisting organizations both financially and with your time and energy. It also means thinking about ways to help others in your everyday life and building relationships with those around you.

As a financial advisor, I have the opportunity to help individuals, families, and business owners make informed decisions that improve their financial well-being and ultimately that financial stability contributes to the strength of Tyler's economy and wellbeing.

Over the next five years, I plan to further my involvement with Promise Academy through service on their board, continue to provide financial counseling to our partner organizations, continue to mentor those younger than me in our community, get further involved and serve within our church home, hopefully use our therapy dog Scout at Breckenridge, and continue attending and supporting various organizations and charities in the community (i..e beyond business, generosity tyler, salvation army, FCA, etc.).

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

My hope for my Leadership Tyler experience is that it will deepen my awareness of our community and the people and organizations that affect how our citizens live their daily lives. I hope to better understand the challenges and problems people in our community face and create relationships with those trying to solve those issues. I hope it will help me get more involved in causes that are dear to my heart but also to become more aware of causes and problems I did not know existed. I also hope to build relationships with more people in our community who have a similar mindset and goal of improving our community.

I believe my experience in public accounting at KPMG, as a Vice President in a commercial real estate private equity firm, and now as an advisor in wealth management give me a unique perspective and skillset that can be used to aid other organizations and people in our community. I also hope my desire to develop relationships with all types of people will bring a sense of community and togetherness to my Leadership Tyler class.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

Tyler, like many other communities, can sometimes feel like two separate economies. On the same day, I can meet with a client who takes multiple vacations, owns multiple homes, and gives thousands to charity and on that same day give financial counseling to a family who has not taken a vacation or knows where they are going to get money to pay rent. I think our community has the ability, resources, and talents to help those who have been given so much continue to find ways to assist those who are struggling to make ends meet.

I believe my role in shaping our community involves bringing more awareness to the different challenges many in our community face to the people who have the ability and desire to help and make a difference. I think it includes bringing up and investing in those younger in our community to not just think about themselves but mentor young professionals to not just help when they get to where they want to be, but to help others along the way, even if it is just with their time. I plan on starting and continuing to serve on the board of Promise Academy in August, and eventually finding other boards and organizations to give my time, expertise, and finances to.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

I feel fortunate to have always worked with companies that have a strong ethical core. While I am unable to think of a time when I felt pressure from others to compromise my personal integrity, Early in my career as a financial advisor, I informed a client that a certain tax strategy would likely save them thousands of dollars. The client was thrilled with this insight and wanted to move forward with the plan. Before executing the strategy, I re-ran the numbers and realized I made an error in my original calculation. Because of the complexity and number of variables, the client would likely have never known the difference. However, I chose to communicate this error to the client after I determined we were not able to save him thousands in taxes. I believe this ultimately built further trust with the client, but was embarrassing for me at the time to have to walk back thousands of dollars in tax savings the client had assumed they would be getting.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Civic/Community involvement is volunteering, voting, attending town hall meetings, and advocating for specific causes or policies that benefit the community. Together, these efforts help to foster social cohesion, enhance democratic engagement, and improve the quality of life within the community. Without civic/community involvement, communities suffer from isolation, reduced accountability, lack of advocacy, inequality, and political apathy, all of which I have experienced and witnessed the negative effects of at a personal and professional level.

Having the opportunity to attend a school focused on leadership, social cohesion, and community involvement, I was able to see the advantages held by a community that networks together, serves together, and grows together. At this stage of my life there are two things that truly weigh on my heart. mentorship and advocacy. It was these vary things that helped me find the strength and self-confidence to pursue my dreams, and it would be an honor to give back, through both participation and education in these areas.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

From the previous education and training on leadership that I have been fortunate to receive, I have learned that this experience has not simply improved my leadership, but it has helped me become a better father, husband, neighbor, community member, supervisor, and employer. The philosophies that influence leadership have helped shape who I am, as well as open my eyes not only to my own potential, but the potential of others around me. I plan to utilize the Leadership Tyler experience to further broaden that same horizon and, in some ways, bring it to a personal level as Tyler is my home.

While I would consider myself adaptable, resilient, dependable, among other favorable qualities, I would not say these are unique qualities but rather necessary for sustainable leadership. The qualities that I am the proud to say I possess are empathy, passion, intuition, curiosity and humor. I believe these qualities have not only enhanced my effectiveness as a leader but have helped cultivate a positive and productive culture among the people I am privileged to lead. It has been these qualities that have helped me to inspire loyalty, drive innovation, and foster a resilient team.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

The Tyler/Smith County area has a strong opportunity to grow a thriving music industry that enhances both cultural vibrancy and economic development. With the region's rich musical heritage and growing interest in the arts, expanding local music opportunities could create meaningful pathways for education, entrepreneurship, and workforce development.

Through my undergraduate and graduate studies in music production and music business, I discovered the that the music industry goes far beyond performance itself but includes careers in marketing, management data analytics, merchandise production, audio engineering, software development, and web design just to name a few. As someone passionate about music, I struggled to see a clear career path in music after high school because entrepreneurship and creative industries were not emphasized in public education.

My goal would be to partner with local schools and community organizations to advocate for stronger music programs emphasizing the diverse career and skill development opportunities connected to the growing music industry.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

During a major restructuring period at work, an employee from another department began spreading rumors that my team was taking unethical shortcuts that compromised the quality of our work. The individual claimed the information came from someone within my team and offered to identify the source only if we publicly exposed and disciplined that employee.

As director, I felt that responding publicly without evidence would violate the standard of integrity and fairness I wanted to uphold as a leader. Rather than giving in to pressure and speculation, I chose to conduct my own investigation before taking action. My investigation revealed that the allegations were entirely false. The employee spreading the rumor had intentionally targeted a member of my team who had become an influential leader during the restructuring process. This individual had helped guide the team through a difficult transition that ultimately created growth opportunities and salary increases for the team, which caused resentment among some employees in the other department.

The experience reinforced my belief that integrity in leadership means remaining fair. objective, and principled even when there is pressure to satisfy public opinion or react emotionally.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define civic or community involvement as exhausting personal resources and free time to commit to projects or events that benefit the community in an innovative or charitable way. I plan to involve myself in various organizations that have missions that personally inspire or resonate with me. Involving myself in organizations that have causes that I am passionate about gives me an opportunity to tap into my strengths and give back to the community in a selfless capacity. As a follower of Christ, I believe I am called to serve others and that is why community involvement is important to me. I am currently seeking out opportunities to involve myself within the community to strive to embody Christ’s character by acts of service and compassion. I expect within the next five years to serve as a member, or in a leadership role, on multiple non-profit organizations advocating for children, education, mental health, women, or veterans.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect to utilize my Leadership Tyler experience to allow an opportunity for personal growth. I expect with a program such as this one, the training provided will give me many tools to acquire more skills and understanding of how to be a confident and successful leader. I also believe that I will be exposed to many different types of leaders that I can learn from. I plan to soak up the information like a sponge and use this program to my advantage to enhance my leadership abilities. Not only do I believe this experience will help me in my current role, but it will also help me in future roles whether it’s in my career, community involvement, or personal life.

The unique qualities that I will bring to Leadership Tyler is a resilient servant-hearted leadership style rooted in integrity, accountability, and compassion. I sometimes say I could write a book with all the personal life experiences that I’ve had at my young age. For some, those same life experiences could cause your heart to harden and lose hope. For me, I’ve found it to strengthen my ability to encourage and support others with understanding and grace. My continuous effort to be more Christ-like pushes me to be committed to self-improvement both personally and professionally.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

The opportunity I see for change in the Tyler/Smith County area is creating more opportunities for good news rather than bad. In today’s political, social, and economic climate, there is so much negativity in the world. Despite the challenges, I believe Tyler/Smith County can be a beacon of light and serve as a source of hope and example. The change comes from rallying our population and involving them in as many opportunities to uplift one another as possible. By intentionally serving others and investing in our community, our ever-growing community can make more good news that can influence not only the city or county, but the surrounding areas in our great state. How I can personally be engaged in this is by offering my desire to succeed, my knack for event planning, and my servant-hearted leadership style. I truly believe I have been called to serve and expect to lead by example in my faith, volunteer work, and career. I am just one individual; however, I believe opportunities start small but grow the more we put ourselves out there. I want to join other individuals that have a similar mindset to make something good outshine the bad.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

This past April my father passed away. The relationship was estranged and difficult. When I heard news that he was in the hospital, I had a lot of mixed feelings. My personal emotions wanted to take the easy route and avoid and dissociate as we hadn’t had a relationship in quite some time. However, he wasn't just my father. He was also my two sisters' father. In that moment I made the decision that I had to be there for my sisters. We spent over 2 days in the hospital before I had to make the call to pull him off the machines. As many know, deaths in families bring out the worst in people. Like the relationship with my father, the relationship with my middle sister is also complicated and our father’s death only made it worse. Dealing with his cremation arrangements, moving him out of his house, settling his accounts caused a lot of friction and really had me questioning why I was involved when I was met with such hostility. At the end of the day, I stuck to my word and did everything I promised I’d do. Integrity is about doing what’s right even when it’s challenging, living in alignment with God’s principles and your convictions, and following through. Despite our difficult relationships, I know in my heart that my actions were to honor my father’s life and support my sister.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Civic and community involvement is giving of yourself to make our community a better place. As a participant in Leadership Tyler, I will give as much time and attention as I can to make Tyler a better place to live, work and grow. I will achieve this through the following ways:
•Listen and learn of the challenges faced by our neighbors, by having open & honest conversations with people;
•As a Board Member for the Tyler Metro Chamber of Commerce, I want to continue to “bridge the gap” by helping to promote the TMCC to other members of the community
•Supporting our local arts community and attending theater productions;
•Shopping local to support the many small & independent businesses, sourcing our business products locally;
•Continue my participation in East Texas Professional Network, CAB903, and Second Tuesday Networking.
•Encourage and mentor our youth by continued support of the Tyler Young Professionals Network and EmpowerNet.
•Continuing my membership in Tyler Executive Women’s Network, Tyler Area Builders Association, Greater Tyler Area Realtors and the Women’s Council of Realtors.
•Continued support for various local and national charities that impact the Tyler area.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

Our experience in the Executive Orientation Class connected my husband and I with other like-minded people. This provided exposure to different people, groups and organizations which allowed us to build meaningful connections (both personal and professional) and showed us new ways to get involved in the community.
The CORE program will give me a much broader knowledge of Tyler’s inner workings and allow me to develop deeper connections in the community. We are growing our business and setting down roots in Tyler.
A Canadian by birth, I have travelled extensively and bring a unique perspective and multi-cultural experience. I have a unique set of professional skills and international corporate experience as I managed AAA buildings of over 1 million sq.ft. in Canada and Australia and worked for Toyota in Nagoya, Japan. I have participated in mentorship programs such as Big Sisters, Toronto CREW and Brookfield’s internal corporate program. I have volunteered for Look Good, Feel Better for women recovering from cancer, Dress for Success, United Way, Canada Heart & Stroke Foundation, GenWell mental health, and Meals on Wheels.
It is important to me to be able to give back to the community that has been so supportive of us, both personally and professionally.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One opportunity for change in the Tyler and Smith County is strengthening collaboration among locally owned businesses and community leaders to ensure that growth enhances the character that makes East Texas special. Tyler is growing rapidly, bringing new jobs, investment, and opportunities. However, with growth comes the challenge of preserving the independent businesses, community values, and hometown culture that make this place special.
Supporting small businesses is important because they are more than economic drivers, they are the people who sponsor local events, support schools and nonprofits, create jobs, and help maintain the unique identity of our community. When local businesses succeed, more resources stay within the community, creating a stronger and more resilient city.
I am personally engaged in this by actively promoting and supporting other local businesses, collaborating with community organizations, and partnerships that benefit all. Through networking, mentorship, and participation in local events and chambers of commerce, I help connect business owners with resources and opportunities for growth. I also advocate for thoughtful development that balances progress with preservation, so that future generations can enjoy the same values and spirit we do.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

While working in a corporate environment, I faced significant pressure to compromise my personal integrity when I became aware that a colleague was stealing from the company. When I initially brought my concerns to my direct supervisor, I was told to “leave it alone” and was encouraged to accept that this was simply how things worked. I was even told that I needed to learn how to “play the game” because the person was considered too important to someone in a position of power for any action to be taken.
I was uncomfortable ignoring behavior that I knew was unethical and harmful to the organization. Rather than looking the other way, I carefully documented incidents that I personally witnessed and maintained detailed records. After my concerns were dismissed by multiple levels of management, I escalated the issue to a Vice President and the head of Human Resources.
An independent outside HR investigation was conducted, and the employee was terminated for cause. While speaking up carried professional risk and was not the easiest path, I believed my responsibility was to the organization's values rather than to office politics. This experience reinforced my belief that integrity means doing the right thing even when it is unpopular, inconvenient, or discouraged by others.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

1. Civic and community involvement is a process in which an individual participates in activities that serve their community. This can be done through various forms such as; serving on committees/boards, volunteering through community organizations, advocating for community representatives, etc. I am currently serving on the board for Junior Achievement of Greater Tyler. I take great pride in their values and mission of giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in a global economy. Helping our next generations obtain the knowledge to have economic success is how our community reciprocates with its own success as they are the future leaders of our community. I hope and plan to have the ability to serve on this board and volunteer through the organization’s various activities for many years to come. (Community involvement daily with work, helping the community with our services)

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

2. Leadership Tyler is an organization of servant hearts that come together from various aspects of life and business. I plan to utilize my time within the organization learning and networking with other individuals in the organization, learning from them and with them on how we can band together and help our community. This experience is also about learning more about myself and my servant heart for the community and where I can take my qualities and help make the most impact with that service.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

I have seen the Tyler / Smith County citizens shown a strong community involvement in my short time back in the area. However, there is always room for growth in this. By learning more avenues through Leadership Tyler as well as advocating through non-profit organizations i can engage in the opportunity of growing our Tyler / Smith County citizens in community involvement.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

During my time in college, I served various officer roles for the bass fishing team. During a transition between presidents for the team some documents were missed and we were no longer in good standing with the university. We were asked to join in a meeting with university officials to discuss the circumstances. Some officers wanted to blame the existing officers that left and not take accountability. After sharing my thoughts that yes information was not shared by our exiting members, it was also our duty to follow up with university officials all documentation was complete. We took accountability in that meeting and showed our loyalty to our members who did not have a seat in the meeting. With that our university members noticed our pride to the organization, and we worked out a compromise to regain good standing and keep competing. Through that meeting we also built a stronger relationship with the university still standing today.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define civic involvement as a commitment to improving the lives of others through service, advocacy, leadership, and relationship-building. Meaningful involvement goes beyond showing up or offering your time, it informs and creates actionable outcomes that benefit all. Personally, I prioritize using my skills, influence, and compassion to strengthen the community for future generations to come. My commitment to this community is deeply personal. I was raised in North Tyler, attended Tyler ISD schools, and graduated from TJC and UT Tyler. Despite my deep roots in the city, I never saw myself as a leader growing up. However, my mantra, “keep going until it makes sense,” opened doors I never imagined possible. I didn’t always know what opportunities existed, but this community invested in me and helped me realize my potential. Now, I strive to pay that forward through roles that support mental health and educational opportunities for students across East Texas. Over the next five years, I plan to continue investing in public education, youth development, mental health awareness, and family-school-community partnerships. Most importantly, I will use my influence to advocate for underserved communities by fostering collaboration amongst stakeholders to ensure every voice is heard.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

As a researcher, scholar, and social justice advocate, I believe Leadership Tyler will deepen my understanding of the systemic issues affecting our community while expanding my ability to lead collaboratively across sectors to improve outcomes. Tyler has a rich history and a forward-focused future; however, I have seen the harm that is caused when we shy away from proactively addressing the issues that leave so many in our community behind. Through Leadership Tyler, I hope to build upon my professional identities and develop actionable strategies that address equity issues related to mental health, education, and cross-sector collaboration. I believe in being proactive rather than reactive and using my courageous leadership to serve others. Therefore, Leadership Tyler will help me strengthen relationships with community members, identify critical needs, and create lasting change through collective action and shared responsibility. I believe I would bring a unique combination of educator, clinician, and community advocate perspectives to the class. My lived and professional experiences in Tyler have allowed me to work across multiple settings and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse realities that shape our community.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One significant opportunity for change in the Tyler and Smith County area is increasing access to mental health support and early intervention services for individuals from marginalized backgrounds. While our community continues to grow, people still face barriers related to stigma, affordability, access, and awareness of available resources. This issue matters because mental health impacts every part of community well-being. When individuals do not receive support early, challenges often become more complex and difficult to address over time. I believe Tyler has a strong foundation of organizations, schools, churches, healthcare systems, and community leaders who care deeply about serving others. The opportunity lies in strengthening collaboration across these systems so families can easily access support and feel connected rather than overwhelmed. I hope to continue engaging in this work through my roles as educator, therapist, and community leader. I am passionate about providing training and education to stakeholders, supporting students and families directly, and encouraging conversations that reduce stigma surrounding mental health. However, I am ready to expand my influence by contributing at the macro-level.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

One situation that stands out involved pressure to prioritize convenience over what was ethically and professionally best for the students and families being served. At the time, there was an expectation to move quickly through a process without fully addressing concerns that could impact the quality of support and outcomes for the students and families involved. While it would have been easier to remain silent, I knew doing so would compromise my values of honesty, responsibility, and advocacy. I chose to voice my concerns, ask clarifying questions, and advocate for a more thoughtful and ethical approach. I focused on remaining professional and solutions-oriented, while reiterating our goal: serving the students and families entrusted to us well. Ultimately, the process slowed down enough to allow for better decision-making at the systems level. This experience reinforced that integrity is not just about personal beliefs; it is about consistently acting in alignment with those beliefs, especially when doing so is uncomfortable or unpopular. The journey has not always been easy, but staying grounded in my purpose and commitment to others continues to guide my work and leadership, because leading with courage has always been bigger than me.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

My definition of civic and community involvement is being present and contributing to the greater good of the community. I moved to the Tyler and East Texas area when I was a kid in 1993, so this community has been part of my life for many years.

For a long time, my involvement was mostly through my children’s schools and extracurricular activities because I was focused on my own education and being a mom to two kids. Over the last two years, I have made a more intentional effort to step into the broader Tyler community, network, and meet new people. Stepping into new spaces was intimidating at first, and I was not always sure what to expect. What I discovered is that Tyler is filled with diverse, generous, and interesting people who care deeply about making our area better.

Within the next five years, I hope to continue growing as a more active and informed community member. I am especially passionate about efforts that support women’s empowerment and the well-being of children. I recently became involved with a new local nonprofit focused on service, compassion, and leadership, and I am excited to see the awareness and positive change it can bring to our community.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect to use my Leadership Tyler experience to better understand the needs, challenges, and opportunities in our community. Over the last two years, I have made a more intentional effort to step into the broader Tyler community. Leadership Tyler would help me learn from people with different backgrounds, build stronger relationships, and find better ways to serve.

The unique qualities I would bring to a Leadership Tyler class are honesty, curiosity, and a willingness to grow. I know what it feels like to step into new spaces and not know exactly where I fit, but I also know the value of showing up anyway. I love deeply, care sincerely, and work hard for the people and causes that matter to me. I am especially passionate about women’s empowerment and the well-being of children. I would bring a real desire to listen, learn, contribute, and become a stronger leader for Tyler and East Texas.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

I see an opportunity for change in helping Tyler become more connected and diverse. I regularly attend an event at the Metro Chamber, and that experience has brought to my attention that Tyler can still feel separated in many ways. I believe everyone has value, no matter their color, background, shape, size, or where they come from.

To me, a stronger community is one where people are willing to come together, listen to one another, and learn from experiences that may be different from their own. We all need help navigating this life, and I believe the best way to move forward is by being open-minded and willing to see the value in every person.

I could be personally engaged in this opportunity by continuing to show up in spaces where I can meet people outside of my normal circle. I can listen, ask questions, build relationships, and encourage others to do the same. I believe change begins when people are willing to step outside of what is familiar and be part of honest conversations. Tyler and Smith County have so much to offer, and I would like to be part of helping our community become more united, inclusive, and supportive of all people.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

I have always told my children to stand up for people and stand firm in what they believe in. That is not just advice I give them; it is something I try to live by.

I am currently facing two situations where staying quiet or backing down would be easier. One involves advocating for a client I believe is being taken advantage of, and the other involves speaking up about a situation that has affected several young women connected to my daughter’s school experience. Both situations have tested my patience, my courage, and my willingness to keep pushing when the easier choice would be to let it go.

I have handled these situations by staying focused on what is right, asking questions, documenting concerns, and continuing to advocate through the proper channels. I do not believe integrity means being loud or reckless. To me, it means being steady, honest, resourceful, and unwilling to ignore something that feels wrong. Sometimes that also means thinking outside the box and finding the right way to move forward when the obvious path is not enough.

I care deeply, and when I believe someone is being mistreated, I do not give up easily. These experiences have reminded me that leadership often begins with the courage to protect and advocate for people who need support.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

I define civic and community involvement as the active commitment to improving others' quality of life through service, leadership, and collaboration. It is more than volunteering; it is about building relationships, understanding community needs, and working together to create meaningful and lasting change. As a leader in emergency communications, I see firsthand the importance of strong community partnerships and engaged citizens. Civic involvement helps connect people, organizations, and resources to address challenges and create growth opportunities. I believe communities thrive when individuals from diverse backgrounds come together to serve, support one another, and invest in the future.
Over the next five years, I plan to continue serving through College Hill Missionary Baptist Church. I will remain engaged with Tyler Together Race Relations, supporting initiatives that strengthen relationships across our community. I also plan to continue my service through Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the East Texas Panhellenic Council, partnering with local organizations to address community needs and expand opportunities to serve. In addition, I hope to increase my involvement in mentoring emerging leaders and encouraging civic engagement throughout East Texas.

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

I expect to utilize the Leadership Tyler experience to strengthen relationships with community leaders, gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing Tyler, and identify ways to collaborate more effectively to serve our community. Leadership Tyler provides a unique opportunity to learn from leaders across multiple sectors while building partnerships that can create lasting impact.
I will bring more than 20 years of leadership experience in emergency medical services and public safety communications, along with a servant leader mindset. Through my work, I have learned how to lead during crises, solve complex problems, and bring people together to achieve a common goal. In addition to my professional experience, I am actively involved in College Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Tyler Together Race Relations, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the East Texas Panhellenic Council. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to service, community engagement, and leadership development. I look forward to sharing my experiences, learning from others, and contributing to a Leadership Tyler class that is committed to making a positive impact in our community.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

One opportunity for change in the Tyler/ Smith County area is strengthening connections between community organizations, local leaders, businesses, and residents. Our community is fortunate to have many organizations working to address important issues. There is an opportunity to increase collaboration, communication, and awareness so that resources and opportunities reach more people. As Tyler continues to grow, growth must benefit the entire community. This includes creating opportunities for leadership development, civic engagement, workforce growth, and community involvement across all areas of the city and county. When people feel connected and informed, they are more likely to become engaged citizens and contribute to positive change. I believe relationships are the foundation of strong communities. I have seen the value of partnerships and the impact they can have during both everyday operations and times of crisis. I have also witnessed how collaboration between organizations can create meaningful solutions to community challenges. I can be personally engaged by continuing to serve and remain active in community initiatives that encourage leadership development, mentorship, and civic involvement. By helping connect people, organizations, and resources.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

One of the most challenging experiences of my life involved being associated with actions that conflicted with my personal values and integrity. During that time, I faced pressure to accept responsibility for things I did not know or participate in. I handled the situation by remaining truthful and cooperating fully throughout the process. Although the experience carried significant consequences, I refused to compromise my honesty or change the facts as I knew them.
The experience taught me the importance of accountability, attention to detail, and the need to trust but verify. It also taught me that redemption is possible when individuals take responsibility, learn from their mistakes, and commit to personal growth. Most importantly, it reinforced that integrity is doing what is right even when it is difficult. Those lessons continue to guide my leadership and decision-making today.

Essay Question 1: How do you define civic/community involvement? What civic/community volunteer experience do you expect to be involved in within the next five years?

Everyone has a different amount of time to give, level of confidence and personal experience that contributes to defining this question. Personally, I'd say community involvement means contributing your voice, action, resources and dedication to caring, empowering others and lastly, leading a legacy. I am passionate about the development of girls/women and building up the community that is supporting them. I'd love to be involved with Hope Haven, the CACSM, Christian Women's Job Corp, Women's Fund of Smith County, JLT, and lastly, Leadership Tyler. I foster community involvement with my Girl Scout team at an impactful level. Example, all Girl Scout staff was present and hands on at the annual Christmas Bash that mentoring alliance hosts. We should be setting the example for our Girl Scouts K-12th so they see the importance of giving back to their communities. Tyler helped me tremendously to achieve my goals, attain scholarships, get to college and equip me with resources. I had a high dependence on my community to relay all the opportunities I had available to me since I was a first generation future college graduate growing up in my community..

Essay Question 2: How do you expect to utilize your Leadership Tyler experience? What unique qualities will you bring to a Leadership Tyler class?

In my organization, I'm currently the only Senior Leadership in our East Texas office location for Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas. My meetings with other leadership and supervisor support are all virtual since our main headquarters are in Dallas, TX. I'd like to integrate myself into a community of experienced leaders that can mentor, coach or simply confirm that all leadership goes through aligned situations. I've always been invested into any open door that allowed me to embrace leadership but I didn't learn a lot about performance management. Leadership Tyler Core Program is perfect for my growth journey. One of the unique qualities I'd offer are my expectations that any experience should be exemplary and of high quality. I hold a high standard for myself and my team. I believe this is a quality that many leaders need strengthening in the leadership sector, especially younger leaders. I also offer a unique perspective with my ethnical background but different culture environment. Lastly, I am young but have reached my leadership goal faster than I believe most people my age have achieved.

Essay Question 3: What do you see as an opportunity for change in the Tyler/Smith County area? Why? How could you be personally engaged in this opportunity?

East Texas Giving Day is a great backup to this question! If you look the leader board, I see the opportunity to change the future of Smith County towards strengthening our system to equip individuals at a younger age to get a higher education and for all non-profit and profitable organizations coming together to serve our city. We are such a caring and philanthropical community and that's a major part of community involvement . We strive as a community to cover as many gaps, needs and enhancement we can contribute to our people. We refuse to turn away when someone is in need and that is so unique in today's world. I believe we have a strong potential for change in aligning on collaboration, doing what's best for the children of our community regardless if it isn't the easier pathway and advocating for the enhancement needed to catch up with the fast speed of innovation.

Essay Question 4: Discuss a time when you felt pressure to compromise an element of your personal integrity. How did youhandle it?

In my teaching experience, there was several conflicts between students throughout the year. As I relayed information to my assistant principal at the time, I was told to relay false or withhold information from parents. I did not feel comfortable or supported by my leadership team in those instances. Instead, I would contact or respond to the parents of my students to relay the truth. At times, I would fear losing my job for not following instruction. If I would have lied, it would not have been protecting my students. Taking the correct disciplinary action or investing time into the root of concerns/problems could have prevented later damage that occurred on the last day of school. My student was harmed as a result of the principals not dedicating what was needed to certain situations. Sometimes, instead of hurting my relationship with a parent and student, doing the right thing would win me the trust of both and I'd start to build a relationship with my students. I saw many of my students learn how to mange their emotions and mature overtime because I made sure to put their best interest at heart. I would not change how I handled the chaos the school leadership brought on us as a staff. I was not let go but it made me realize I did not want to commit to another school year.
